CLASSIFICATION

SORTING DIVIDING
Classification

-divides or sorts things, people, idea

into groups, classes, or categories

-organizes ideas into divisions based

on criteria or standards

-related methods for organizing objects

or information
Classification vs. Division
In division, you divide a general
category of things into smaller
subcategories
Example:
There are three main problems
associated with living across from a
high school: noise, trash and traffic
congestion.
Classification vs. Division
In classification, you develop criteria
for the items in a subcategory based on
relationships between the items.
Example:
In a music store, compact disc are
organized into many subcategories such as
country, rock, hip-hop, dance music, world
music, classical, jazz and soundtracks.
Classification vs. Division

Division and classification make it

easy for individuals to locate what
they are looking for, but these
organizational methods are also
useful for understanding complex
problems or issues.
Points to Remember:

The purpose of classification paragraph is

to clearly define something and place it in a
group according to some basis or rule. You
must first have a strong sense of purpose,
because without it, your system for
dividing or classifying information may not
meet your needs.
Points to Remember:

In writing a classification essay, your goal

is also important. Example, problems
created by society by the cell phone; for
this student, dividing these problems into
categories – cell phones as a social problem
and cell phones as a cause of accidents or
physical injury.
Points to Remember:

Classifying cell phones according to size,

price. Convenience, and appearance would
not be an effective system for this
argument.
