company is going, so that everyone is working with the
same information toward the same goal. It helps to
ascertain what the organisation is, exactly what it does,
and why it does it, focussing on optimising future
potential.

The current wireless standards operate in the 5 GHz

frequency range, and many different standards
available. Some are function-specific, and others are
used only in certain geographical areas.
• IEEE 802.11 is the world's most widely used
wireless computer networking standard
• IEEE 802.11ax is widely expected to be the next big
thing wireless standard
Topic 1 – Determine Organisational Needs
Organisational Needs
An organisation can be private enterprise, government

or not-for-profit.
It is important to understand an organisations structure
and the business environment in which it operates.
• Governance is the way in which organisations are

managed and controlled.
• Values outlines what the organisation stands for.
• The vision and mission outlines what the
organisation wants to achieve.
• The strategy outlines how it intends to achieve it.
SWOT Analysis
This analyses the strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities and threats of an organisation.
Based on the SWOT analysis, key issues facing the
organisation are identified. This then paves the way
for strategic goals to be achieved and highlights any
gaps.
ICT Strategic Planning

ICT strategic planning aligns technology with business
goals, which should support the organisations
strategic objectives.
Researching Technology
Researching technology is an important aspect of

business planning - it ensures that all options are
explored and the best solutions to meet the
organisation’s goals are met
Information Gathering
Information gathering techniques that could be used to
research technology options include:
• Brainstorming
• Interviewing
• Root cause analysis
• Studying existing organisational documentation on the
ICT infrastructure
• Using the Internet to look at reviews
• Consultation with IT specialists
• Sourcing information through industry associations,
publications, websites or referrals
Requirements Report
A number of questions need to be addressed before
addressing technology needs:
• Background of organisation
• Problem definition
• Issues or factors impinging on problem definition
• What are the objectives
• Criteria for achievement of objectives
• Resources available
• Possible strategies
Requirements Report
A number of questions need to be addressed before
addressing technology needs:
• Does the technology fit the need?
• Plans for the future
• Budget Project specifications
• Project timelines
Once these questions have been addressed and the
requirements confirmed, then options for the hardware
technology can be reviewed.
Activity: Software asset management
Using your college classroom, learning centre, place

of work or home, conduct a hardware and software
asset management audit. Create a table that shows a
list of all the hardware and all the software.
Selection Criteria
There are a number of selection criteria that could be used

for reviewing hardware options:
• Cost
• Hardware requirements
• Licencing offered
• Support and maintenance options
• Security
• If the product or service matches the performance
criteria
• Reputation of vendor
• Training
Rating Scales
In order to determine how well criteria has been

met, rating scales are given to each. The rating
scales are used to compare different products.
Activity: Selecting a new computer
• Consider all the selection criteria that you would need

for purchasing a new computer.
• List down what you would consider important criteria.
• Rank the criteria.
• Provide a weighting.
• In a table, research three computers and use a table
to show the evaluation for each product.
• Show the totals and provide a summary of the criteria,
ranking, scaling and weighting that you chose and
why.
Reviewing Strategic Goals

Strategic planning should be constantly reviewed to
ensure that it is still achieving the original vision.
Progress should be monitored against milestones and
adjusted to changing conditions. Reviewing the strategic
plan provides an opportunity to assess and evaluate not
only the state of the business but also the industry so
that vision, goals, priorities and actions can be re-aligned
if needed.
Future Requirements
A review of the effectiveness of the IT strategy and how

this is aligned to the requirements of a business must also
consider future requirements:
• What do we currently have in place?
• Is the IT infrastructure in place still relevant?
• What is needed for the future
• How do we change to realign the vision?
• Do we need to replace, upgrade and if so why?
• What existing resources can be utilised and or
integrated?

Emerging Technologies
Emerging technologies represent technical

innovations and progressive developments in ICT.
Class activity:
• Divide into small groups.

• The trainer/assessor will allocate two emerging
technologies per group.
• Research the technology write a brief overview.
Include:
- The technology and how it works
- Its affect on businesses
- A short video that represents the technology
ICT Infrastructure
The infrastructure of IT within a business

encompasses: • Networks
• Servers • Software
• Workstations • Protocols
• Printers • Procedures and
• Cables processes
• Routers • Administration
• Switches
• Devices
Financial Parameters
These may include parameters for:

• Overall ICT budget
• The amount of equipment that can be purchased
• Training and support required
• Conducting financial ratios such as Return on
Investment
• Cost/benefit analysis
Activity: Project for Pipe Dream – Determine organisational

needs
Read through the business plan and then address the following
questions:
• List the organisational needs of Pipe Dream
• What new technology is required?
• What selection criteria could you use to determine the new
technology?
• What would be the future requirements for the ICT
infrastructure?
• Using one of the suggested objectives, assess the physical
infrastructure that would be needed and provide an
approximate financial cost.
Topic 2 – Research Vendors, Suppliers and
ICT Industry Specialists
What is a vendor?
Class activity: Brainstorm vendors in the IT

industry

Suppliers and Vendors
There are a number of key players in the ICT

industry influencing the direction and use and
procurement of hardware and software.
Vendors make or sell products and (or) services and
can range from a small organisation to a large
company. Examples include IBM, Apple and
Microsoft.
Sourcing Information
The requirement’s report outlines what is required.

This could be anything from:
• Installation of a new network infrastructure
• Purchasing a new roll-out of laptops for staff
• Upgrading the current Operating System
• Purchasing new keyboards
• Transferring back up to a cloud service provider
Contacting Vendors
Obtaining quotes from different vendors or requests

for tender will provide an overview of what is
available. It should show:
• Specifications of the product/service
• Any performance criteria that it must meet
• Costs
• Terms and conditions
• Delivery options and costs
• Timings for delivery
Assessing Information
An organisation may have a number of policies that

need to be followed when purchasing equipment, such
as:
• Purchasing procedure
• How to select products and services
• Which suppliers should be contacted
• Payment methods
• Documentation that should be completed
• Standards that must be followed
• Migration of data
Class discussion:
How would references and referrals be of benefit

when selecting a vendor for purchasing computer
hardware components?
Would it be safe to rely on social media when
selecting a vendor, based on reviews received?
Industry Standards
• Different industries have different standards but with

the same benefit of ensuring that products and
services are safe, reliable and fit for purpose.
• There are mandatory standards which all business
must follow if they operate in a particular industry or
sell certain products. e.g safety electrical standards
for hardware equipment (IEEE Electrical interface
Standards).
• Voluntary standards represent best practice and is not
a legal requirement.

Look up the following standards, provide a brief summary of

each: • Integrated Standard
• Bluetooth Architecture (ISA)
• HDMI • Serial ATA (SATA)
• BIOS Boot specification • RAID
• FireWire
• Integrated Drive
Electronics (IDE)
Do these standards apply to open source or proprietary

designs?
Quality of Hardware
This can be from the features provided to the reliability of

equipment. Overall the attributes will be dependent upon
the purchaser. Like most products, however, better quality
usually means greater cost.
Benchmarking helps organisations to identify performance
gaps in equipment and can measure and compare
performance against existing organisational benchmarks
or industry standards.
Quality Assurance
Quality assurance is another measure that can be used

to determine the quality and reliability of products.
Quality assurance puts strict controls on products and
services and provides certification of quality standards.
ISO standards sets out the requirements of these.
Emerging Standards
There are always new technologies being developed

and the need for standards and quality assurance to be
met for these new technologies. For example, Virtual
Reality, Data Mining, Block Chain, Web standards,
Cloud computing.

Review emerging standards and applications:

1. Research the concept Mixed Reality (MR) and the
related standards being used today.
2. What standards are used for the Microsoft HoloLens?
3. Consider the RTO ICT infrastructure set up (in your
classroom or visit the learning centre/computer lab, or
base on a real-life work environment). Assume that the
college would like to invest in some VR technology,
identify a supplier and vendor for equipment that would
work with the current ICT set up.

be the internal components in a computer, the
peripherals, networking hardware, cables, etc.
• Most organisations will have an ICT infrastructure
that has been identified to meet their needs.

however, the hardware, whether or not from the
same vendor would be similar in its network set up.

• A review of the Business/ICT strategy and technology
needs
• Consideration of future demand/emerging technology

place

1. Source a laser computer for the office. It must:
• Be compatible with the current system
• Have the option to be networked
• Have a fast DPI
2. Review at least three printers using an online
evaluation.
3. Make a recommendation based on your findings.

place can be a step by step process:
• Conducting an asset register review
• Creating a testing plan for the hardware tests
• Conducting tests
• Analysing results
• Making recommendations

When you research and review options then you will no

doubt be undertaking this as a project. With a project
there will be risks. e.g for purchasing hardware:
• Potential for the technology to fail
• A failure to meet the goals of the business
• Lost revenue if production stops
• Security incidences including theft, hacking, data loss
• Over budget
• A failure to control the change
