At the end of the discussion, the learners

shall be able to:

 define the mean, median and mode;

 find the mean, median and mode of the given set
of data;
 relate the mean, median and mode in real life
situation.
Measures of Central Tendency
It provide a summary measure that attempts
to describe a whole set of data with a single
value that represents the middle or center of
its distribution.
There are three main measures of
central tendency:

The test scores in Mathematics
of 9 students are :

86 97 84

73 63 88

97 100 95
What is the MEAN?
How do we find it?

The mean is the numerical average

of the data set.

The mean is found by adding all the

values in the set, then dividing the
sum by the number of values.

The mean is 87 783
What is the MEDIAN?
How do we find it?
The MEDIAN is the number that is in the
middle of a set of data
1. Arrange the numbers in the set in
order from least to greatest.

2. Then find the number that is in the

middle.
63 73 84 86 88 95 97 97 100

The median is 88.

Half the numbers are Half the numbers are

less than the median. greater than the median.

Median

MEDIUM
Think middle when you hear median.
How do we find
the MEDIAN
when two numbers are in the middle?

1. Add the two numbers.

2. Then divide by 2.
63 73 84 88 95 97 97 100

88 + 95 = 183

183 ÷ 2 The median is

91.5
What is the MODE?
How do we find it?
The MODE is the piece of data that
occurs most frequently in the data set.
A set of data can have:
 One mode
 More than one mode
 No mode
63 73 84 86 88 95 97 97 100

The value 97 appears twice.

All other numbers appear just once.

97 is the MODE
A Hint for remembering the MODE…

The first two letters give you a hint… MOde

Most Often
Which set of data has ONE MODE?

9, 11, 16, 6, 7, 17, 18

A

B 18, 7, 10, 7, 18

C 9, 11, 16, 8, 16
Which set of data has NO MODE?

9, 11, 16, 6, 7, 17, 18

A

B 18, 7, 10, 7, 18

C 13, 12, 12, 11, 12

Which set of data has
MORE THAN ONE MODE?

A 9, 11, 16, 8, 16

B 9, 11, 16, 6, 7, 17, 18

C

work than the others.

Right in the

Direction: Answer the following in a 1/2 sheet of paper crosswise.

1.The number of incorrect answers on a true-false competency

test for a random sample of 15 students were recorded as follows:
2, 1, 3, 0, 1, 3, 6, 0, 3, 3, 5, 2, 1, 4, and 2. Find
a.) the mean;
b.) the median; and
c.) the mode

2.Solve the following problems:

a. Cassandra’s Candles sold the following number of candles over
the last 6 days: 25, 48, 25, 33, 57, 50. What was the average
number of candles sold each day?

b. The median for 10, 9, y, 12, and 6 is y. Find possible values of

y, given that the values are whole numbers.
Assignment

A. For the following groups of numbers, calculate the mean, median and
mode for each.
1. 18, 24, 17, 21, 24, 16, 29, 18
2. 75, 87, 49, 68, 75, 84, 98

B. Solve the following word problems.

1. Brian was comparison shopping for DVD players. He decided he wanted

to purchase a DVD player that was in the middle of the price ranges. The
prices he was quoted include the following: $59.99, $219.99, $79.99,
$84.99, $159.99, $109.99, $35.99. Which DVD player did Brian select?

2. Chad recently launched a new website. In the past six days, he has
recorded thefollowing number of daily hits: 37, 29, 37, 56, 45, 38. He is
hoping at week’s end to have an average number of 40 hits per day. To
achieve this, how many hits must he have on the final day of the week?
