What is Internet of Things(IoT) ?

The Internet of Things

(IoT) is the network of
physical objects - devices,
vehicles, buildings and
other items embedded
with electronics, software,
sensors, and network
connectivity - that enables
these objects to collect
and exchange data.
How IoT Works?
ARCHITECTURE OF INTERNET OF THINGS
Comprises specialized hardware boards, software
systems, web API’s and protocols.

 Allows smart embedded systems to be connected to

internet

 Devices connected to Internet using Wifi , ethernet

etc

 Devices with unique IP address.

The Thing

The “Thing” is an embedded computing

device (or an embedded system) that
transmits and receives information over a
network for the purpose of controlling
another device or interacting with a user.
How do we make these “Things” ?
Selection of a proper
microcontroller

 Memory size
 Number of general purpose input output pins
 Peripheral Communications (USART)
 Communication capabilities (Wired- For example:
Ethernet, Wireless- For example: Wifi, bluetooth,
ZigBee, IR etc)
Selection of Sensor

 Selection of Sensor is purely application specific.

 Transducer:-
A device that converts variations in a physical quantity
, such as pressure into electrical energy or vice-versa.

Actuator:-
An actuator is a component of a machine that is
responsible for moving or controlling a mechanism or
system.
Various Names, One Concept

• M2M (Machines to
Machines)

• Internet of Everything”
(Cisco Systems)

• “World Size Web”

Where is IoT?

It’s everywhere!
 Wearable Techs
 Daily life smart appliances
 Health care
Few Applications of IoT

 Building and Home automation

 Manufacturing
 Medical and Health care systems
 Media
 Environmental monitoring
 Infrastructure management
 Energy management
 Transportation
Some Diverse Applications
HAPIfork

The HAPIfork is an
electronic fork that
helps you monitor and
track your eating habits.
It also alerts you with
the help of indicator
lights and gentle
vibrations when you are
eating too fast.
Smart Washing Machine

Smart Aqualtis is the first

Indesit Company washing
machine designed to be
integrated in ‘Smart’
ecosystems, covering a
wide range of use cases.
Smart Home Security
Canary is a complete security system packed into a single
device. It adapts to your home over time and sends intelligent
notifications with HD video directly to your smart phone.
Smart Lighting

Control your bulbs one at

a time or altogether. Find
just the right shade of
white. Pick that perfect
tone to match the moment.
Or recreate any color from
a photo.
Smart Sleep System

Visualize your sleep

cycles, understand what
wakes you up, and
compare nights. From
the palm of your hands
you can control your
personalized wake-up,
and fall-sleep programs.
Blood Pressure Monitor

Simply slip on the cuff,

turn on the Wireless
Blood Pressure Monitor
and Health Mate app
will automatically
launch.
Smart Weather Station

A door lock that allows
you to lock and unlock
your home using your
smart phone, bluetooth
keyring or computer.
Future of IoT

Gartner estimated that 2.9 billion connected things

are in use in the consumer sector in 2015 and would
increase to over 13 billion till 2020.
CISCO’s Prevision
Weapon of mass disruption
Threat vs Opportunity

 If misunderstood and misconfigured, IoT possess

risk to our data, privacy and safety.

 If understood and secured, IoT will enhance

communications, lifestyle and delivery of services.
