Connecting Chemistry

to Our World
Learning Objective

• To know the meaning of

chemistry and relate its
importance to daily life
Key Understanding
 Understanding of the meaning of
chemistry, its importance to daily life
and, its contributions to society and
technology
Key Question
 What is chemistry?
Role of Chemistry in Society
and Technology
• Chemistry has helped advance human
civilization.

• Through researches in chemistry, crop-

enhancing agricultural chemicals have
been synthesized to make sure that
society will have constant and viable food
supply.
Role of Chemistry in Society
and Technology
• Water-treatment processes have been
developed to make water fit for human
consumption.

• Life-saving pharmaceuticals are

formulated to eradicate deadly diseases,
and synthetic plastics and fibers are
produced for both industrial and
consumer use.
Role of Chemistry in Society
and Technology
• Chemistry also plays an important role in
the production of shelter and clothing.

• There are numerous other benefits that

chemistry has given to mankind. In all of
these, we can see that chemistry has a
huge and vital role in technological
development.
Tasks of a Chemist

• Chemists are scientists trained to apply

chemistry principles in various fields of work.
• They do laboratory works, analyses, and
experiments that contribute to technological
advancement.
• Results of the chemists’ innovative thinking,
valuable work, and achievements have
contributed to give mankind better quality of
life.
Careers Using Chemistry

 AGRICULTURIST
 CHEMISTRY TEACHER
 DIETICIAN
 FOOD TECHNOLOGIST
 MATERIALS ENGINEER
 METEOROLOGIST
 PHARMACIST
 RADIOLOGIST
What Is Chemistry?

• Chemistry is the central science. This means

that a basic understanding of chemistry is
essential in the study of all other fields of
science: physics, biology, earth science,
ecology, environmental science, and others.

• Chemistry is likewise central to our daily

lives—be it as individuals or as a society.
What Is Chemistry?

• Chemistry is the study of matter, its

composition, its structure, its properties,
the processes that matter undergoes, and
the energy changes that accompany these
processes.
What Is Chemistry?

• In studying chemistry, questions that you

may ask include: What is the composition
of this solid? What are the properties of
this liquid? What happens to this material
when cooled or heated? In fact, these are
some questions that chemists answer
when they work.
Branches of Chemistry

• Organic chemistry – with few exceptions like

carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2),
involves the study of carbon-based compounds

• Inorganic chemistry – in general, the study of

compounds that do not contain carbon

• Biochemistry – the study of the chemistry of

living systems
Branches of Chemistry

• Analytical chemistry – study of the quality and

quantity of components of substances

• Physical chemistry – study of the mechanism,

rates, and energetics of chemical reactions
Section Assessment

• Read the article in your book (pages 5-6) and

answer the following questions:
1. What is the role of chemistry in society and
technology?
2. How does chemistry contribute to other fields
such as medicine and materials engineering?
3. Why are chemists important?
