“At Pentecost the disciples were all
filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4),
which means they were filled with the
love of God. They had an overwhelming experience of
being loved by God. That alone explains the unexpected
and radical change that took place in them. Pentecost is
the moment when the heart of stone is shattered to bits
and its place is taken by the heart of flesh and this
"heart-transplant" didn't take place under total
anesthesia!”
Fr Raniero Cantalamessa, O.F.M. Cap
Preacher to the Papal Household since 1980
(Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict, Pope Francis)
Colloquium on the Baptism of the Holy Spirit,
17 -20 Mar, 2011, Rome, Italy.
“Baptism in the Holy Spirit,
praise, service to man. The
three things are indissolubly
joined. I can praise
profoundly, but if I do not

“you constantly remind the Church of the power of prayer of praise. Praise
that is the prayer of gratitude and thanksgiving for God’s gracious love.
Perhaps some people do not like this way of praying, but surely it is fully a part
of the biblical tradition. Take the Psalms: David dances before the Ark of the
Covenant, filled with exultation… And please, let us not fall into the attitude
of Christians who have the “Michol complex”, ashamed of the way David
chose to praise God.”
What is
How did it Start?
• Pope St. John XXIII prayed at the start
of the Second Vatican Council
(1961)
“Renew Your wonders in this our day, as by
a new Pentecost. Grant to Your Church that,
being of one mind and steadfast in prayer
with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and
following the lead of blessed Peter, it may
advance the reign of our Divine Savior, the
reign of truth and justice, the reign of love
and peace. Amen”
• While he was Bishop Angelo Roncalli (1930’s),
he used to visit a tiny Czech village of 300
people who had experienced the full
spectrum of the charisms (charismatic gifts –
1 Cor 12-14). It started in the 11th century
when the village were in danger of starvation
due to a severe cold which ruined their crops,
they prayed for God’s help. A Beautiful lady
appeared and taught them how to implore
the Holy Spirit. They were all filled with the
Spirit and received charismatic gifts (tongues,
prophecy…etc).

Up to now the teaching on baptism in the Holy Spirit
has been based on a few scriptural texts, whose
interpretation was disputed. This doubt cast its
shadow on those who promote baptism in the Holy
Spirit. Now new evidence has been found in early
post biblical authors (Tertullian, Hilary of Poitiers,
Cyril of Jerusalem, John Chrysostom, Philoxenus, and
the Syrians) which demonstrates that what is called
baptism in the Holy Spirit was integral to
Christian initiation (baptism, confirmation,
Eucharist). Because it was part of initiation into the
Church, it was not a matter of private piety, but
of public worship. Therefore it was and
remains normative. This is an intriguing ground
breaking study of value to RCIA teams, pastors,
theology teachers and students, and Church offices.

• They also experienced a growth in sanctifying
gifts, esp love. The bread which they baked
were blessed and lasted them till the next
harvest.
• With each generation, the presence and
power of God became stronger with prayer.
When someone got sick, the entire village
would pray. There were no divorce. There
was no need for jail and hospitals. Sunday
Mass was a glorious celebration of Jesus in
their midst.

Cardinal Leon-Joseph Suenens
called Pope John XXIII
“a man completely docile to the Holy Spirit, a
man who, completely free from himself,
followed the path of the Holy Spirit”
The Catholic Messenger (Davenport, Iowa),
7th May, 1964.
How did it Start?
• 6 years after the prayer by Pope John XXIII,
the Duquesne Weekend happened (Feb 17-
19, 1967)
• 7 months later, the Life in the Spirit Seminar
was developed to introduce people to a
renewal and experience the love of God, the
Father, the redemptive sacrifice of Jesus and
acceptance of His Lordship and a powerful
and intimate relationship with the Holy
Spirit, The Author and Giver of Life.
Pope Francis, Homily at the Feast of Pentecost,
2016. St Peter’s Basilica.

“The Spirit is given to us by the Father and

leads us back to the Father. The entire work of
salvation is one of “re-generation”, in which
the fatherhood of God, through the gift of the
Son and the Holy Spirit, frees us from the
condition of being orphans into which we had
fallen.
Pope Francis, Homily at the Feast of Pentecost, 2016.
St Peter’s Basilica.
In our own day also, we see various signs of our
being orphans: in the interior loneliness which we
feel even when we are surrounded by people, a
loneliness which can become an existential
sadness; in the attempt to be free of God, even if
accompanied by a desire for his presence; in the
all-too-common spiritual illiteracy which renders
us incapable of prayer; in the difficulty in grasping
the truth and reality of eternal life as that fullness
of communion which begins on earth and reaches
full flower after death; in the effort to see others
as “brothers” and “sisters”, since we are children of
the same Father; and other such signs.
Being children of God runs contrary to all this and is
our primordial vocation. We were made to be God’s
children, it is in our DNA. But this filial relationship
was ruined and required the sacrifice of God’s only-
begotten Son in order to be restored. From the
immense gift of love which is Jesus’ death on the
cross, the Holy Spirit has been poured out upon
humanity like a vast torrent of grace. Those who by
faith are immersed into this mystery of
regeneration are reborn to the fullness of filial life.”
Pope Francis,
Homily at
the Feast of Pentecost, 2016.
St Peter’s Basilica.
“a grace directed
a) to sanctify the Church,
b) to renew in her the taste for prayer,
c) to rediscover with the Holy Spirit, the sense of
gratuitousness, of joyful praise, of confidence in
intercession, and
d) to be converted into a new fountain of
evangelization.”
St Pope John Paul II
22 Jan 1987
“Speaking of dispensers of grace, I ask each and all
of you that as part of the current of grace of
Charismatic Renewal you organize seminars of Life
in the Spirit in your parishes and seminaries,
schools, in neighborhoods, to share Baptism in the
Spirit.”
Pope Francis

The Power Of…
• Prayer and Praise
CCC 2097
To adore God is to acknowledge, in respect and
absolute submission, the "nothingness of the
creature" who would not exist but for God. To adore
God is to praise and exalt Him and to humble oneself,
as Mary did in the Magnificat, confessing with
gratitude that He has done great things and holy is
His name. The worship of the one God sets man free
from turning in on himself, from the slavery of sin and
the idolatry of the world.
The Power Of…
• Prayer and Praise
• Proclamation of the Word
Rom 10:17
So faith comes from what is heard, and what
is heard comes through the word of Christ.

Heb 4:12
Indeed, the word of God is living and active,
sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing
until it divides soul from spirit, joints from
marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and
intentions of the heart.
The Power Of…
• Prayer and Praise
• Proclamation of the Word
• Personal Testimony
1 Pet 3:15
but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord.
Always be ready to make your defense
to anyone who demands from you an
accounting for the hope that is in you

Acts 4:33
With great power the apostles gave their
testimony to the resurrection of the Lord
Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.

• Proclamation of the Word
• Personal Testimony
• People of God
1 Cor 12:25-27
that there may be no dissension within the body,
but the members may have the same care for
one another. If one member suffers, all suffer
together with it; if one member is honored, all
rejoice together with it.
Now you are the body of Christ and individually
members of it.

The Benefits of Running a Life In the
Spirit Seminar
• Whets a hunger for prayer and intercession.
• Stirs a study of the Word to live and present
it.
• Inculcates self reflection and a sense of
community within the team.
• “Forces” the team to present the reality of
God in their own lives, in their own way –
Evangelization.
The 5 goals of the CCR
1. Conversion – normally through LSS.
2. Empowerment – normally through
BHS.
3. Edification – through charisms.
4. Sanctification – through integration of
life of Church and formation.
5. Evangelization.

Power of
Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole
Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit
and the door which gives access to the other
sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed
from sin and reborn as sons of God; we
become members of Christ, are incorporated
into the Church and made sharers in her
mission.
