FIRST LAW OF

THERMODYNAMICS
By: Sir Dabs
Esystem= q+w

Heat + Work
Work is done on the system w+ q-
Work is done by the system w- q+
A gas releases 35J of heat as 84J of work was
done to compress it.

Esys = (-q) + (w) = - 35J + 84 J = 49 J

Endothermic
A gas absorbs 48J of heat as it does 72J of
work by expanding.

Esys= q+(-w) = 48J+(-72)= -24

Exothermic
What is work done by the system when it
absorbs 47J of heat and gain 12J of energy

Esys= q+(-w)= 12J+(-47J)= -35J

Exothermic
How much heat is released by a system when
45J of work is done on it to decrease its energy
to 23J.

Esys= (-q)+w = (-45J) + 23J = -22J

Exothermic
A system releases 86 kJ of heat while 104 kJ of
work is done on the system. Calculate
the change in internal energy.

Esys= (-q) + (w) = (-86000J) + 104000J = 18000J

Endothermic
The system absorbs 73 J of heat while
35 J of work is done on it.
If the system acquire 73 J that is need for the

Esys= q+w = 73J + 35J = 108J

Endothermic
What is the change in energy of the system that
requires 80J of energy to do 150J of work

Esys= q+(-w) = 80J + (-150J) = -70J

Exothermic
