Myth / Assumption: If the rocky and intertidal areas are reclaimed, fishermen can shift to

deep-sea fishing

Artisan fishing is low-intensity and passive method, in contrast to the technology-

intensive, high-intensity and active method of commercial fishing which involves deep
sea fishers or trawlers who employ large boats, and whose expeditions last over days,
shallow water marine artisan fishers use small or mid-sized boats, work teams of one to
six people, and their expeditions synchronize with the daily tidal rhythms of the sea.

While deep-sea fishers hunt for fish by pursuing their resource, artisanal fishing involves
waiting for and trapping fish that move in the shallow waters due to tidal, ecological and
seasonal variations. Their fishing tools and techniques have adapted to the different
ocean depths and terrain, catch being sought, and techniques of deployment. The Kolis
also play an important role in protecting and conserving the marine ecology through
their artisanal practices. This includes using particular sized nets, which do not trap
juvenile fish, and releasing marine animals like Dolphins if they get caught during fishing.
Deep-sea fishing is thus an alienating, unviable and an expensive livelihood practice to
be forced upon artisanal fisherfolk.

The practice of traditional fishing and ancillary activities is therefore a part of the living
heritage of the koli community and significant to the identity of the community which
cannot be replaced by the concept of deep-sea fishing.
