SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES WEB
ENHANCEMENT
a. Facebook
b. Twitter

a. Early Begginings
• Social networking was born one day in 1971, when the
first email was sent. The two computers were sitting right
next to each other. The message said “qwertyuiop’.

b. The First Social Networking Site
• In 1994, the first social networking site was created,
Geocities. Geocities allowed the users to create and customize their
own web sites, grouping them into different ‘cities’ based on the
site’s content.
• A few years later, AOL Instant Messenger and SixDegrees.com
launched in 1997.
• Other niche-driven sites are Asian Avenue–established in 1997. By
1999, BlackPlanet was established and in 2000, MiGente.com for
Hispanic servers. In the mid-1990s, the internet was at its full force.

c. New Millenium: New Era in Social
Networking
• The first modern social networking site that we define
today is Friendster. It also uses the degree of
separation concept similar to SixDegrees, but dubbed
it ‘Circle of Friends’.
• Soon MySpace followed suit, who cloned Friendster. It
was launched after only 10 days of coding. It soon
became more popular than Friendster.

• Another site with considerable success is LinkedIn.
It was established in 2003, and took a more
professional and business approach to social
networking.
• Facebook came into the social networking scene a
little bit later. It was launched in 2004, and the
primary intent was to connect US college students.

d. The Future of Social Networking
• Today, there are now almost 600 social
networking sites on the Internet
• Today’s social networking sites are like
yesterday’s front page headlines.
• In five years time, Facebook might be replaced
by a newer web site–or it might be the only
one.

a. The Biggest Social Networks
• They're the ones that everyone's using, and the ones
that see the most activity. If you want to be where
everything is happening, jumping on a few of these
popular platforms would be a good idea.
b. Anonymous Social Networks
• Users claim it helps take the pressure off of impressing
their friends and offer the opportunity to say exactly
what's on their mind.
BACK NEXT
c. Social Networks for Teens
• Teens are often the ones who spot the next big social
network before they really take off, so if you know a
teen, it may be worth talking to them about which
social apps or sites they're using.
d. Location Sharing Networks
• Now that social networking has been taken mobile, it's
easier and more exciting to share what you're doing
and where you're doing it in real time.

e. International Social Networks
• You might be surprised to find that there are quite a
few international social networks that are almost just
as big as Facebook in other parts of the world.
BACK NEXT
a. Registration Form
• Keep your registration form as simple as possible.
Broken down to the bare bones a simple email and
password field may suffice but you may want to include
fields for first and last name.
b. Profile and Feed
• Apart from the general fields remember to keep fields
which will be of interest to other users and which will
be in coherence with the general theme of your site.
BACK NEXT
c. Easy interactions between users
• So make it easy for users to communicate between
each other either actively or even observe what other
users and their connections are doing.
d. User Interface
• Having a simple yet interactive user interface is a must
for a successful User Experience. One of the ways to
keep the UI interactive is by using ajax and javascript.

e. Ability to import users from other sites
• This helped in the viral growth of facebook and is one
of the major reasons why facebook is what it is.
f. Search
• Your site should have the option to search through
users, communities etc. Ideally if the user is new you
can even suggest him what networks might be
interesting to him based on his location or interests.

Groups
The big focus at this year’s F8 keynote’s speech
was community
As Zuckerburg mentioned, our digital lives need both
a public and private space. This means users are turning to
Facebook Groups and closed communities to post and
share details of their life to an audience that they know
will be engaged and interested on the topic.
