FREEDOM / LIBERTY?
• A social and political concept which has a great
significance in how people participate in society.
• It emerged as philosophical issue in the 18th century
during the age of Enlightenment.
• Intellectuals or Enlightenment thinkers pondered on the origin of
society and the nature of human freedom.
• Belief: Man existed in a natural state and had absolute freedom

• In order to live in harmony and to ensure survival of


the society, people entered into social contract
which defined the freedom that they will be enjoying
as members of the society
Freedom in Political
and Social Context
• Freedom of an individual from
oppression, compulsion or
coercion from persons an
authority figure, or from society
itself.
Political Freedom
• Positive Liberty
• A person taking control of his or her own
life and fulfilling one’s potential
• Negative Liberty
• Freedom from external restraints, barriers
and other interferences from other people.
Political Ideologies (comes from human liberty)
• LIBERALISM – upholds the preservation of
individual rights and stresses the role of the
government in protecting these civil liberties.
• LIBERTARIANISM – believes that individual NOT
THE GOVERNMENT is the best judge in upholding and
exercising rights.
• SOCIALISM – considers freedom as the freedom
to acquire economic resources and the ability to
work and act according to one’s desires.
FREEDOM ENTAILS RIGHTS
• NATURAL RIGHTS – innate in the
person as the right to life. It is

• LEGAL RIGHTS – based on society’s
customs and laws and are enacted by
legislation and enforced by a
government.
THEOLOGICAL VIEWS: FREEDOM
• Freedom from sin and living a life
of righteousness. It is living a life in
accordance with the will of God

• Freedom is freedom to make choices
in life.
• Human freedom is expressed in

alternative courses of action or decisions.
• FREE ACTIONS- the freedom to perform an
action without any obstacles or hindrances

• Believe that man has free will because he or she is able to
entertain reasons not to enact a certain decision and act upon them
when the need arises (crossing the street)

will but prevented to engage their free

How can we effectively exercise freedom
in our life?
1. Moral responsibility can be an effective guide in the
proper exercise of freedom
• Moral responsibility refers to a person’s status of deserving
praise and reward or blame and punishment for an action.
• Free will, control and regulation are necessary
• Assuming that all actions are free, we have to confront the
moral responsibility of our actions.
2. Interaction with other people in society is important
exercise of freedom
• Our actions should be done in consideration of the norms and laws
in our society
• He or she should not only uphold his own right but the right of their
people as well.
