F-500 “Encapsulator” Agent

(Triangular Peg)
What is F-500?

 F-500 is an Encapsulator Agent

 A multi-purpose cULus Classified
Class A & B fire suppression agent.
 A flammable liquid spill control agent.
The Chemistry of Fire

• Tetrahedron:
– Oxygen
– Fuel
– Heat
– Chemical Chain Reaction
• Fire Suppression
– Elimination of one or more
legs of the fire tetrahedron
F-500 Encapsulator Technology
Fire Suppression Mechanics

• Surface Tension Reduction

– Common to all fire suppression agents

• Rapid & Permanent Heat Reduction

• Encapsulation
• Interruption of the Free Radical
Coalescence
Surface Tension Reduction
• Spreading and penetration (spreading coefficient)
• Smaller droplet size (increased surface area)

F-500 Encapsulator Agent Characteristics
 Amphipathic Molecules
– Large molecule with a polar end and a non-polar end with
sufficient distance between so that each end acts independently
• Polar end (hydrophilic - “loves water”)
– Soluble, it dissolves in water
• Non-polar end (hydrophobic - “fears/hates water”)
– Protrudes out of the water droplet and seeks out molecules other than
water (such as hydrocarbon)
F-500 Molecular Orientation

Alters the physical characteristics

of the water droplet
• Non-polar tail protrudes from water
• Polar head drawn to water surface
• Creates a skin of F-500 at the surface
of the droplet

Unique Feature #1:
Rapid Heat Reduction

Due to amphipathic molecule heat is driven

into the internal portion of the water droplet.
The F-500 solution never makes contact with the flame

Unique Feature #3:
Interruption of Free
Radical Coalescence*
* When free radicals coalesce or “come
together”, they form soot and smoke

• Tests show a 97% reduction of airborne

toxic particulates of incomplete
combustion
– Reduced soot formation indicates
INCREASE IN VISIBILITY
Clemson University Tests
interruption of free radical chain reaction
• F-500 can increase visibility 68%, 100

Percent Visibility
providing a safer, more visual attack of 80

– Can see potential life-threatening hazards 40

and locate victims 20
– Allows closer, more aggressive and safer

F-500 Fire Suppression Mechanics
• Surface Tension Reduction
– Saturates wetted surface area
– Increased penetration into pores

• Rapid & Permanent Heat Reduction

– 1200O F to 127O F in seconds
– Absorbs many times more kcal/hr than plain water
– Provides burn-back resistance

• Encapsulation
– Forms a “chemical cocoon” around liquid and vapor
– Renders materials nonflammable (“Locked Up”)

• Interruption of Free Radical Coalescence

– F-500 high molecular weight molecule absorbs free
radical energy
– F-500 inhibits coalescence of free radicals
• Reduction of toxic smoke & soot
• Improves visibility
• Improves air quality
F-500 Engineered Environmental Advantages
• Non-corrosive
