 He studied under Nicanor Abelardo at the University of the
Philippines (UP) Diliman conservatory of music and graduated at
1932 with a teacher’s diploma in Music, Major in science and
composition

 He wanted to be part of the military. He was later commissioned by


Gen. Basilio Valdez. He was transferred to PMA

 He also studied compostion for a post-graduate degree under Jeno


Takacs at the Institute of International Education in New York
 He became the music director of the UST Conservatory in
Music in 1961 and the UE school of music and arts in 1964
and faculty member of the UP conservatory in Music.

 He became the instructor and band conductor of the


Philippine Military Academy and restored the Philippine
Constabulary Band in 1945.

 He introduced the idea of using Philippine folk music material into a


form which was basically western

 Maceda graduated with a music diploma at the Academy of Music of
Manila in 1935 before he was sent to Paris, France where he studied
piano.

 He also studied musicology at Columbia University, anthropology at


Northwestern University, and ethnomusicology at University of
California
 He wrote papers that enlightened Filipino and foreign scholars
about the nature of Philippine traditional and ethnic music.

 Usually performed as a communal ritual

 Maceda was professor emeritus at the University of the Philippines


(UP) and a specialist in both Indonesian and Filipino music. He
taught piano and ethnomusicology at the UP College of Music from
1952 to 1990.

According to UPCE, “the multi-and inter-disciplinarity of his practice and
teaching has not been fully explored as material in creating, critiquing and
deconstructing contemporary scholarships and creations beyond the realm of
music.”

Thus, according to Santos, “Listen to my Music” reveals the deeper meanings of


Maceda’s sound structures vis-à-vis the sounds and music of other artists.

 He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music, Major in Piano at the
University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music in 1956. He got a
scholarship grant at the UST in the same year and studied the cello
under Professor Modesto Marquiz, finishing in 1965. In 1968, he
completed his Master’s Degree in Music at the Sta. Isabel College.
 From 1960 to 1968, he was a cellist at the Manila Symphony Orchestra.
He also played for the Manila Chamber Soloists from 1966 to 1970. His
career as a musical director began in 1960, when he was discovered by
Joseph Estrada. In 1963, Cuenco was sent as a delegate to the
International Music Conference in Tokyo, Japan. He was also a music
teacher at the UST until his death on July 11, 1988.
