PROBLEM
 Centella asiatica (Gotu kola) is a herbal species
which is commonly used as a traditional medicine
especially for skin care and cosmetic
 C.Asiatica contains flavonoids, phenolic acids,
titerpenic steroids, amino acids, sugars, vitamins,
and essential oils
 C.Asiatica often used for dermatology treatment
such as small wounds, acne, scars, burtns, and
many more
 Beside that, C.Asiatica also used as a treatment
for Alzheimer’s disease, memory loss, diabetes
mellitus, wound healing, venous insufficiency and
varicose veins and antiinflammatory
PURPOSE

 The aim of this study was to evaluate

the cosmetics properties of centella
asiatica cream and hydogel
 To evaluate the therapeutic,
pharmacodynamics and anti-
degenerative agents of C.Asiatica for
herbal medicine
METHOD
Instrument : A test that involved the
application of the examined
emulsion and hydrogel to the skin
under adhesive tape
Data : The changes of skin pH and
hydration percentage after the
application of emulsion and
hydrogel with C.Asiatica extract
Sample : 25 volunteers
Population : Participants between 18-55 years
old
Place : Chemical engineering research
laboratorium of USU
STEPS
 First, The dried C.Asiatica was extracted with 70% ethanol
in 150 ml flask for 24 hours on a water bath shaker with a
frequeency of 200 cycles/minute
 Then we mixed, the cosmetic with 2,5%-5% of C.Asiatica
extract
 After that, the cosmetics were tested on the group of 25
volunteers
 We had checked if the participants got irritate by placing the
cosmetics on their skin for 48 hours
 It showed that all the volunteers were on a good condition
 Then, the volunteers chould apply the cosmetics for four
weeks, twice a day, on the tested area (forearms)
 After four weeks, the tested area were measured by
tewameter, pH meter and chromameter
RESULT AND DISCUSSION
 There were significant increase in hydration after
the first week of application.
 The best result were showed for cosmetics with
5% of C.Asiatica extract.
 The hydration increased by 12% on the first
week and 25% on the fourth week.
 It showed that C.Asiatica could be used to treat
dry and sensitive skin.
 The active substances of C.Asiatica could affect
the reduction of erythema and improve skin
barrier function (decrease pH value).
CONCLUSIONS
 C.Asiatica have been used for decades as a
herbal medication.
 Now a days, it often used in cosmetics and skin
medications.
 C.Asiatica could improve the skin hydration and
decrease transepidermal water loss.
 It also could decrease the appearance of aging
skin, collagen, and topical scars.
 Beside that, it could be used to treat Alzheimer’s
disease, memory loss, diabetes mellitus, wound
healing,etc.
