CAUSES

 A disease caused by virus spread through bite of aedes

mosquito (female mosquito of Aedes aegypti and Aedes
albopictus.
 caused by four closely related viruses named DEN-1, DEN-
2, DEN-3, and DEN-4 (called serotypes because each has different
interactions with the antibodies in human blood serum). They share
approximately 65% of their genomes — but within a single
serotype, there is some genetic variation. Infection with each
of the dengue serotypes results in the same disease and
range of clinical symptoms.
TRANSMISSION

 Transmitted only by the bite of striped Aedes mosquito that

has previously bitten an infected person (not spread directly
from person to person.)
 Occur usually at tropical and subtropical regions
 Hot and humid months.
 Breeds easily during rainy season
 Active early in morning and late afternoon
 Incubation period : 2-7 days (during which the virus
multiplies)
 2 form of disease Dengue fever and Dengue
haemorrhagic fever (DHF)
SYMPTOMPS OF DENGUE FEVER

 High fever (39-41)

 Chills
 Rash
 Pain behind the eyes
 Severe joint and muscle pain (breakbone fever)
 Backpain
 Enlarged lymph nodes
 Redness of the eye
 Loss of appetite
 Nausea
 Vomiting
 Headache
SYMPTOMPS OF DHF

 High fever (40-41)

 Abdominal pain
 Haemorrhage (severe bleeding)
 Bleeding of nose and gums
 Circulatory collapse (shock)
 Sore throat and cough
 Pneumonia
 Inflammation of the heart
 Blood in stool
TREATMENT
• paracetamol,
• Acetsminophen • painkillers
• codeine
Severe
headache,
joint , Body ache
muscle pain

High Prevent
temperature dehydration

• Sponged down • Fluid

• with water with wet
tove (20 min at a time)
TREATMENT

 Patient with DHF monitored few days until condition

stabilises
 If suddenly worsen (temp. suddenly drop or show
sign of circulatory shock may go into DSS. Can die
in 12-24 hours
 Patient may recover quickly appropriate volume
therapy (fluid). If significant bleeding, blood or
platelet transfusion carries out
 Usually will recover in 7 days
PREVENTION

 Currently no vaccine.
 Container should be covered (prevent egg-laying)
 Empty old tyres, cans, bottles, tins, flowerpots.
 Check drains. Ensure no blockage especially during
rainy season
PREVENTION

 Add insecticides such as larvicide to water to

ponds etc.
 Wear lose light colored clothings
 Apply mosquito repellents
 Sleep under mosquito net
PREVENTION

 Use mosquito coils

 Breed small mosquito larvae-eating fish in pond
 Local Authorities from Ministry of Health conduct on
site check
 Fogging
