 Nur-ud-din Salim Jahangir was the ruler of theMughal
Empire from 1605 until his death. The name Jahangir is
from Persian ‫جہانگير‬, meaning "Conqueror of the World". Nur -ud-
din or Nur al-Din is an Arabic name which means " Light of the
Faith.“

 Born as Prince Muhammad Salim, he was the third and eldest

surviving son of Mughal EmperorAkbar.

 He was born at the dargah of the Shaikh Salim Chishti,

within the fortress at Fatehpur Sikrinear Agra. The child was
named Salim after the darvesh and was affectionately
addressed by Akbar as Sheikhu Baba.
Education

Akbar ensured that his son received the best education possible.
Salim started his studies at the age of four
taught Fārsi, Turkish, Arabic, Urdū, history, arithmetic,
geography and other sciences by important tutors like Abdur
Rahim Khan- I -Khanan, a renowned soldier and scholar.
 In comparison with the ceaseless architectural activity that
was maintained during the greater part of Akbar’s reign , the
period of the rule of his son and successors Jahangir was in the
field of building art related and eventful.

 He took interest in laying out large formal gardens and similar

ornamental retreats rather than the erection of architectural
monuments. Inspite of this partiality for minor arts the main
structure of one of the most remarkable building of the mughal
period was produced during the early years of Jahangir’s reign.
This was his father’s mausoleum at sikandera near Agra.

 There were other examples of architecture produced during

the reign of Jahangir which shows the trend of the building art
at this juncture, the western gateway to a sarai at jalandhar , a
small but attractive structure of the precious order as the
design was aimed at detailed rather than breadth and strength.
 The outstanding architecture production of the later
years of this emperor’s rule was his own mausoleum at
Shadera near Lahore, most of which was probably
constructed after his death under the order of his
remarkable consort, nur mahal begum.

 This form as the custom of mughals occupies the center

of te immense garden square in plan and over 1500 feet side
on the old bank of Ravi River enclosed by a high brick wall
with a gateway in the middle of each side. This garden in one
of largest and also the most conventional of its kind as it is
divided up into 16 equal squares by means of paved pathways
while a fountain and ornamental pool were placed at each
intersection, within the center of this layout stands the
tombs building also square in plan and of 325 feet side a
structure of one storey only but with handsome octagonal
minarates with 5 stages rising up from each corner to a
height of nearly 100 feet above ground level
 Architecturally this mausoleum except the 4
minarates is unimpressive, its principle effect being
obtained through applied coloured decoration distributed
freely over all its surfaces. In providing this
embellishment several processes were called into
requisition such as fresco painting, inlay, and mosaic
tiles, the on the pavements the colour work being used in
the interiors the tiles on the corridors and semi precious
stones enriched with graceful scrolls the white marble of
cenotaph .

 Jahangiri buildings not only mark a change in the

architectural style but also in the method of decoration.
A marble intarsia of various colours in which hard rare
stones such as lapis , onyx, jasper , topaz , cornelian and
the like were embedded in the marble in graceful
foliations.
