Geothermal Energy in Indonesia

Geothermal Master Program – INAGA SC ITB

OUTLINE
1. What is Geothermal Energy ?
2. Geothermal Area in Indonesia
3. How Geothermal Industry Works ?
4. Indonesia Geothermal Plants
What is Geothermal Energy ?

Is the thermal energy

generated and stored in the
earth.

Tectonic plate is the most

play control where the
geothermal energy can
found.

Indonesia “Ring of Fire” is

located in between
Eurasian – Australian –
Pacific plate
Geothermal Component

1. Heat Transfer
2. Heat Source
3. Reservoir Rock
4. Caprock
5. Heat Sink
Why Geothermal ?

1. Indonesia has biggest

geothermal potency and spread
in almost all regions.
2. Clean energy (low emissions).
3. “Renewable” energy.

KMJ-3 is the first geothermal well in Indonesia

(by the Dutch Colonial gov in 1926)
Direct Use

The energy is directly used (not for electricity) such as for:

a) Tourism – for hotel, attractive beach and/or recreational
activities. Modified Lindal Diagram
b) Hot spring/pool.
c) Fisheries - captivity, hatchery, and grow-out.
d) Plant/food drying, snow melting, space heating, etc.

 The resource temperature limits the possible uses

 Cascade and combined uses enhance the feasibility
 Examples:
 Use the same geothermal water first for industrial
heating and there after for space heating (cascade uses)
 A geothermal plant that produces both electricity and
hot water for district heating (Combined Heat and
Power) CHP
