isn't kept whole, it isn't language anymore
(Rigg,1991:522)

Was developed to help young children learn to read,

to teach secondary levels and ESL

Respect students as members of culture and as a

creator of knowledge, and respect for teachers as a
professional.
How does it relate to other

Is designed to help children and adults learn a

second language in the same way that
children learn their first language.
The idea of "whole" language has its root in a
range of theories of learning called "holism".

Based on holism
- it is believed that learning small
chunks of language can never tell us everything
about how the entire
human mind works.
Example:
This is a ball.

I like to eat sandwich.

His hobby is to watch T.V.

Teacher's role

• Facilitator and active participant in the learning

community.
• Looks for the occurrence of teachable
moments. (no preplanned lesson plan or script)
• Negociates a plan of work with
the learners.
Ss' Role

• Is a collaborator
• Evaluator
• His learning experiences are used as resources for
learning.
• Selectors of learning materials and activities. (real
world materials)
Advantage
• They have a better understanding of what they are reading, and a more
interesting and creative approach to reading.
•There are no lists of sounds or rules to be learnt.
•Children are able to observe real reading behaviors in nonthreatening situations
and to imitate such behaviors without fear or shame.
•Children are exposed to outstanding children’s literature from the very beginning of
their reading experiences.
They are not asked to read artificially simplified or contrived language. This makes
reading more interesting for them.
Disadvantage

• Ss' who are taught using a pure whole language approach

without a phonics component have a difficult time learning
how to spell.
• Ss' misinterpreting word
• Never learning how to sound out unknown words and not
comprehending the basics of the English language.
• Children with limited ability to memorize a sequence of
words.
