Levels of

Organization
Guide Questions
• What are the different levels of
organization in an organism?
• How each level differs from one
another?
• Give examples of each level of
the organization.
Levels of
Organization
Does this apply
to humans?
Levels of
Biological
Organization
Cells

• A cell is the
most basic
unit of
structure and
function of all
living things
life.
Tissues

•Group of cells
that are
similar in
structure and
function.
Tissues

1) Muscle
2) Connective
3) Nerve
4) Epithelial
ORGANS

• Composed of one
or more types of
tissues. The tissues
of an organ work
together to
perform specific
function.
Plants have organs too!
LEAVES, STEMS, ROOTS…!!!!
Organ Systems
Each organ in your
body is part of an
organ system, a
group of organs that
work together to
perform a major
function.
For example, your heart is
part of your circulatory
system, which carries
oxygen and other materials
throughout your body.
Besides the heart, blood
vessels are organs that
work in your circulatory
system.
Organ Systems
ORGANISM
an entire living thing (can even be unicellular or multi-
cellular)

Humans, plants,
animals, and
microorganisms
like bacteria
Organisms
POPULATION
• Population: A
group of
organisms of
the SAME
species that
live together.
POPULATION
COMMUNITY
• Community: A group of organisms with
different species living in the same place
and sharing the same characteristics.
ECOSYSTEM
• Ecosystem: made up of a
community of organisms
and the abiotic
environment of the
community.
• An ecologist studying the
ecosystem could examine
how organisms interact as
well as how temperature,
precipitation, and soil
affects the organisms.
BIOSPHERE
• Biosphere: part of Earth
where life exists.
• Extends from deepest
parts of ocean to high in
the air where plant
spores drift.
• Ecologists study the
biosphere to see how
organisms interact with
the environment.
