When are Upstroke Jars used

More potential to break wire jarring up

Allow for a controlled release of tension

Schlumberger Private
Less cycling of the wire

Greater impacts can be delivered in deviated

wells

Can be used in conjunction with Accelerator Jars

Down-stroke Jars are available

Types and positioning of Upstroke Jars

Three prominent types used:

Oil (Hydraulic) Jar

Schlumberger Private
Spring Jar

Hydro-mechanical Jar

Always situated between the mechanical jar and

stem

Multiple jars in toolstring?

Oil (Hydraulic) Jar

Fluid bypass principle used - allow time for a pre-

determined tension to be applied then wait

Cannot be used in gas wells – gas enters the oil

Schlumberger Private
chamber and the tool acts as a damper - “gassing
up”

Jar oil viscosity affects tool efficiency

Does not require calibration

O rings must be in premium condition

Spring Jar

Uses Spring tension a allow for a pre-determined

release

Uses either a spring or multiple belleville washers

Schlumberger Private
Springs with different tensions – marked with lines
or dots

Calibration tool and test sub available for belleville

Upstroke Jar - safety

Weak point – the fishing neck is the weak point

Threads are exposed to jarring impacts, can

Schlumberger Private
become stretched

 Roll pin through neck to prevent rotation, if

movement found renew rod and fishing neck

Does body of jar have fishing neck?

Record open length of jar – ensure rig up

Oil (Hydraulic) Jar – release sequence

After latching device – pull tension ( 50%

min breaking strain of wire)

Either apply brake or hold on the “bite”

Schlumberger Private
Oil slowly passes piston – depends on oil
viscosity and well temperature

Balance piston moves up to compensate –

Oil (Hydraulic) Jar – release sequence

Piston enters larger I.D.

Fluid bypass maximized

Balance piston moves up lower I.D.

Oil (Hydraulic) Jar – release sequence

Set down toolstring slowly

Toolstring weight sufficient to close jar

Schlumberger Private
Bypass valve in piston opens once rod
enters smaller I.D.

Allows fluid to move from below to above

Balance piston moves back to initial

position

 If device unmoved – repeat sequence

Flopetrol Spring Jar – Preparation

Correct spring must be installed before

RIH

Determine approximate pick up weight at

Schlumberger Private
target depth

Pick up Weight + Spring tension = release

tension observed on weight indicator

Shallow in well – lower pick up weight

Deeper in well – greater pick up weight

Shallow – larger tension spring / deeper?

Petroline Upstroke Jar – summary
Jar should always be tested on surface to
confirm jar release tension

damage re-latch spring

Pick up slowly – washer housing has to move

up aided by re-latch spring

allow time for trip keys to engage jar rod –
