What is a tropical
rainforest?
3
The tropical rainforest is a hot, moist
biome found near Earth's equator.

•The tropical rainforest biome has four main
characteristics: very high annual rainfall,
high average temperatures, nutrient-
poor soil, and high levels of biodiversity
(species richness).
6
Rainfall
• The word “rainforest” implies
that these are the some of the
world’s wettest ecosystems.
Tropical rainforests receive from
60 to 160 inches of precipitation
that is fairly evenly distributed
throughout the year. Tropical
rainforests also have high
humidity; about 88% during the
wet season and approximately
77% in the dry season.
7
Temperature
• :Tropical rainforests are found near
the equator, between the Tropic of
Cancer (23°27’N) and the Tropic of
Capricorn (23°27’S). The equator
receives direct sunlight. This steady
flow of radiation produces
consistently high temperatures
throughout the year. A typical
daytime temperature any time of
year in tropical rainforests is 29°C
(85°F), although temperatures can be
much higher.
8
Soil Composition:
• Since there is a tremendous
amount and diversity of foliage in
tropical rainforests, you might
assume that rainforest soils are rich
in nutrients. In fact, rainforest soils
are nutrient-poor because nutrients
are not stored in them for very
longing the tropical rainforest,
plants grow so fast that they
rapidly consume the nutrients from
the decomposed leaf litter.
9
Soil Composition:
•As a result, most of the
nutrients are contained in
the trees and other plants
rather than in the soil.
Most nutrients that are
absorbed into the soil are
leached out by the
abundant rainfall, which
leaves the soil infertile
and acidic. 10
Biodiversity:
• Tropical rainforests are
areas of extremely high
biodiversity compared to
other ecosystems
Biologists estimate that
tropical rainforests
contain about 50% of the
world’s terrestrial plant
and animal species, yet
they encompass only
about 6% of the world’s
land area. 11
Where are the largest
tropical rainforests found?

The world's largest

tropical rainforests are in
South America, Africa,
and Southeast Asia.

12
WHY DO RAINFORESTS HAVE
SO MANY KINDS OF PLANTS
AND ANIMALS?
Tropical rainforests contain the greatest
biodiversity of living organisms on Earth.
• Over 15 million species of plants and
animals live within this biome Although
they cover less than 2 percent of
Earth’s surface, rainforests house
more than 50 percent of the plants
and animals on Earth. Every year new
species of mammals, birds, frogs, and
reptiles are found in rainforests, that is
why rainforest has the greatest
biodiversity of living organisms.

rainforests teem with
life—in fact, these
precious ecosystems are
home to 80 percent of
the world's terrestrial
biodiversity.

Rainforests have abundant
plants and animals for the
following reasons:
• :Climate: because rainforests are
located in tropical regions, they
receive a lot of sunlight. The sunlight
is converted to energy by plants
through the process of
photosynthesis. Since there is a lot of
sunlight, there is a lot of energy in
the rainforest. This energy is stored in
plant vegetation, which is eaten by
animals. The abundance of energy
supports an abundance of plant and
animal species.
27
• The combination of constant
warmth and abundant moisture
makes the tropical rainforest a
suitable environment for many
plants and animals.
Canopy
•Canopy: the canopy structure of the rainforest
provides an abundance of places for plants to grow
and animals to live. The canopy offers sources of
food, shelter, and hiding places, providing for
interaction between different species. For example,
there are plants in the canopy called bromeliads that
store water in their leaves. Frogs and other animals
use these pockets of water for hunting and laying
their eggs.
