Analysis : Wedding Veil
– Far back in Greek and Roman times, veil is believed to be used to hide a bride
“from evil spirits who might want to thwart her happiness” or to frighten the
spirits away.
Descriptive
– Sensory engagement; the fabric is light, the texture is not soft, but
not smooth, especially with the lace because it has pattern
– Intellectual engagement; it was use by brides on their wedding day
to symbolize modesty before God, obedience, and chastity.
– Emotional response; in some cases, the veil is a part of the
surprise-effect from the bride to the groom. So, when the groom
lift the veil, the groom could not see her face until the vows and
would be surprised (in a good way) by the bride’s appearance.
When we see the veil worn by the bride often the bride and the
family cried because they feel touched, proud, and awe.
Speculation
– It must be related to religion and belief, especially western culture and religion such
as, Christianity and Judaism(Jews).
– The usage is only for wedding ceremony.
– Not only for symbolism and superstition, but also as accessories
– As for nowadays, it was used to symbolize social class and fashion statement. For
example, the longer the veil, the fancier it looked and usually when it was designer-
made and worn by celebrities or royal families.
– The veil is worn to cover the bride’s face because later on when she is older, she will
not look the same as she was in her wedding day. In order to validate the groom’s
love toward the bride is that he is not marrying her for her appearance , but for her
inner beauty and her subtlety.
