 What is the passive voice?

• The passive voice is always used with a form of ‘werden’. It’s used
more in English than German.
• Sometimes, a sentence that is passive doesn’t include an ‘agent’,
which by whom something is done.
• The agent can be a person, which mean ‘von’ will be included in
the passive sentence. ‘Durch’ is used if the agent isn’t a person.
• The direct object becomes the subject (nominative).
• Passive voice is used to emphasise the thing that is being acted
upon.
When is the passive used?

• It’s used if the agent is unknown.

• Formal contexts
• Newspaper articles
