1. PAST
PERFECT TENSE
The past perfect tense is used to show that
something happened before another action in
the past. It can also be used to show that
something happened before a specific time in
the past.
THE FORM OF
PAST PERFECT TENSE
(+) S + Had + V3 + O
Example : I had gone to bed by ten o’clok
(?) Had + S + V3 + O
Example : Had the cat kileed the parrot
2. PRESENT
PERFECT TENSE
Present perfect tense combines the present tense and
the perfect aspect used to express an event that
happened in the past that has present consequences.
This tense is used to show a link between the present
and past and is commonly used in everyday
conversations, and when writing letters.
THE FORM OF
PRESENT PERFECT TENSE
(+) S + has/have + V3 + O
(?) Has/have + S + V3 + O
To talk about an action that will finish before a certain time in
the future
Example: By eight o’clock tomorrow, I will have taken off for Japan.
Example: She will have learnt Chinese before she moves to China.
Ayu : Hi, Amma, Arfah. We have just visited our grandma in Jakarta
Amma : Oh… I see. But wait.. I think you have visited your grandma before.
Haven’t you?
Sandy : Yes, we have visited her three times this month. She was sick so we
went to Jakarta again.
Arfah : How is your grandma now ?
Ayu : She is better. She is in our house now.
Amma : Really ?How long has she been here?
Sandy : She has been here for three days.
Ayu : Actually, she has missed her children and
grandchildren. That’s why she was sick.
Arfah : Oh, sickness because of missing people she loves.
Ayu : : Yes, she is.
Amma : We guess she will be well soon. And send our warm regard to your
grandmother
Sandy : We will send it to her. Thanks.
