Introduction

If you have asthma, COPD, or another lung disease, your doctor has
prescribed medicine that you need to take using a nebulizer. A nebulizer is a
small machine that turns liquid medicine into a mist. You can sit then
breathe in through a connected mouthpiece with the machine. Medicine goes
into your lungs as you take slow, deep breaths for 10 to 15 minutes. It is easy
and pleasant to breathe the medicine into your lungs this way.
Purpose
1. To relieve respiratory insufficiency due to bronchospasm.
3. To liquefy and remove retained thick secretion form the lower respiratory tract.
4. To reduce inflammatory and allergic responses the upper respiratory tract.
5. To correct humidify deficit resulting from inspired air by passing the airway during
the use of mechanical ventilation in critically and post surgical patients.
6) When a child or young person has an acute asthma attack.
7) When a child or young person is in respiratory distress.
8) When a child or young person has stridor.
9) If child or young person is unable to use an inhaler.
Equipment

- Air compressor
- Nebulizer cup
- Mask or mouthpiece
- Medication(either unit dose vials or bottles with measuring devices)
- Compressor tubing
The basic steps to set up and use nebulizer are as
follows :

Wash your hands as well.

Connect the tube to an air compressor.

Put the medicine into the nebulizer cup with your prescription from
the doctor.

Assemble the nebulizer cup and mask or mouthpiece.


To avoid spills, close the nebulizer cup tightly and always hold
the mouthpiece straight up

Turn on the compressor to make sure it is working correctly. You


should see a light mist coming from the back of the tube opposite
the mouthpiece. Small children usually do better if they wear a
mask.

Place the mouthpiece in your mouth. Position thw mouthpiece
properly so that all of the medicine goes into your lungs. Take slow,
deep breaths. If possible, hold each breath for 2-3 seconds
before breathing out. This allows the medication to settle into
the airways.

Continue the treatment until the medication is gone (an average of
10 minutes). The nebulizer will make a sputtering noise, and the
cup will have just a little medication remaining.

Turn off the machine when done

Wash the nebulizer cup and mouthpiece with water and allowed
air dry. Then store it in the dry and clean place
