Caring for Orchard Trees &

Seedlings

BY NATHALIE KIRSTEN REMOLANO

VI-CENTAURUS
Orchard gardening is not an easy task.
Ways of Caring for Orchards

A. Systematic Way
 Something that is done in a systematic way or
done according to a fixed plan.
 Step by step procedure
Proper ways of watering plants
1. Natural 2. Manual

3. Artificial
a) Surface or Furrow irrigation = Water is distributed
to each row so it is applicable only for row crops with
uniform slope.
b) Sprinkler Irrigation = this include the line, rotating
and micro sprinklers in which artificial rain is generated
through special devices that wet the entire field.
c) Drip or Trickle Irrigation = a special water source
designed to discharged water close to the plant, wetting
only that area and leaving the rest dry.
d) Sub-irrigation = this type of irrigation is very
expensive because the water source is under the ground.
Proper Irrigation is very
important for each
orchard may it be small or
large scale. It has to be
done properly for the
seedlings to grow healthy
and the trees to start
bearing fruits.
Proper Ways of Cultivation

Cultivation
 Loosening and breaking up (tilling) of the soil. The
soil around existing plants is cultivated (by hand
using a hoe, or by machine using a cultivator) to
destroy weeds and promote growth by increasing
soil aeration and water infiltration. Soil being
prepared for the planting of a crop is cultivated by
a harrow or plow.
Two Ways of Cultivation

1. Off-barring = cultivating the soil in rows

2. Hilling-up = cultivating the soil towards the
base of the plant.
When cultivation is
undertaken properly, the
growth of weeds can be
controlled. Soil texture
will improve plant’s
growth and destructive
microorganisms found in
the soil will eventually die.
