HOW WOULD YOU

NOW REPRESENT THE

PIE?

1

A man is like a fraction whose numerator
is what he is and whose denominator is
what he thinks of himself. The larger the
denominator, the smaller the fraction.

2
FRACTIONS

◆ A fraction indicates a
part or portion of a
whole or unit.
3
FRACTIONS
◆ The number on the top of the bar line is
called the numerator. That indicates how
many are to be taken from the equal parts
when the whole is divided
◆ The denominator indicates how many
equal parts the whole is divided.

FRACTIONS
◆ TYPES OF FRACTIONS
1. Proper Fractions – it is a type of fraction
whose numerator is smaller than the
denominator.
2. Improper Fractions – is a fraction which
the numerator is equal or greater than the
denominator.
3. Mixed Numbers – it consists of a whole
number and a fraction.

IN A ¼ SHEET ANSWER P
DRILL (PROPER), I (IMPROPER) AND
M (MIXED)
◆ 3/4 ◆ 5/9 ◆ 4/3
◆ 4/6 ◆ 1/1 ◆ 7/7

◆ 3/9 ◆ 2/9 ◆ 1/45

◆ 4/2 ◆ 4/3 ◆ 8/7

◆ 3 ½ ◆ 2/34 ◆ 4/420

A FRACTION IS CLASSIFIED AS A SIMPLE FRACTION
IF IT WAS REDUCED IN LOWEST TERMS. THIS
MEANS THAT THE NUMERATOR AND DENOMINATOR
CANNOT BE DIVIDED EVENLY BY THE SAME
MANNER EXCEPT 1.

8
REDUCING FRACTIONS TO LOWEST TERMS

◆ A fraction is simplified when it is reduced to its lowest

terms without changing the value of the fraction.
◆ To reduce a fraction to its lowest terms, divide both the
numerator and the denominator by the greatest
common denominator (GCD) the GCD is the largest
number which is a common divisor of both numerator
and denominator

9
EXAMPLES

◆ 12/20 ◆ 24/56
◆ 36/48 ◆ 15/65
◆ 6/9 ◆ 8/34
◆ 2/4 ◆ 45/100

numerator is smaller than the denominator.
2. Improper Fractions – is a fraction which the

3. Mixed Numbers – it consists of a whole number

CHANGING IMPROPER FRACTIONS TO MIXED NUMBER

◆ Divide the numerator by the denominator to

change an improper fraction to a whole or mixed
number.
◆ If the remainder is zero, the quotient is a whole
number.
◆ If the remainder is not zero, the improper fraction
will be expressed as a mixed number.
12
LET’S PRACTICE

◆ 120/10 ◆ 12
◆ 119/3 ◆ 39 2/3
13
◆ 135/4 ◆ 33 3/4
WRITE A MIXED NUMBER AS AN IMPROPER FRACTION

◆ Find the numerator of the improper fraction.

◆ Multiply the denominator of the mixed number

by the whole number part.

◆ Add the product from the previous step to the

numerator of the mixed number.

◆ Use the denominator of the mixed number.

14
TRY THIS!
Convert 10 ¾ to an improper fraction
◆ The numerator of the fraction is “3.”
◆ Multiply the whole number, which is “10” by the
denominator which is “4”; the result is 40.
◆ Add the numerator to product; 40 + 3 = 43.
◆ Retain the same denominator.
◆ 43/4 is the improper fraction equivalent.
