What is Social Relationship ?

with other people, and how
they interact and behave with us.
2. we learn to cooperate with
others in achieving a common
objective.
3. What differentiates personal relationship
with social relationship is the degree of
intimacy and vulnerability we offer to
other people.
4. The more intimate and vulnerable we are
with another, the more personal our
relationship is with this person.
What is Social Influence ?
as things such as behavior, actions
attitude, concepts, ideas,
communications, wealth, and other
resources that bring about changes in
the beliefs, attitudes, and/or behavior
of persons as a result of the action/s
of another person. (Rashotte, the
authors)
types of Social Influence
• Conformity : is a type of social influence that
involves a change in behavior, belief or thinking to be
like others to obtain their friendship and acceptance.

• Conversion : occurs when an individual whole
heartedly changes his or her original thinking and
beliefs, actions, and attitudes to align with and accept
those of the other members of a group.

• Minority influence : happens when a


bigger number of people are influenced by a much
smaller number of people to accept the minority’s way
of looking at and doing things.
TYPES OF SOCIAL INFLUENCE by Herbert Kelman

1. 1. Compliance (Group Acceptance )


Is when a person seems to agree, and follows
what is requested or required of him or her to
do or believe in, but does not necessarily have
to really believe or agree to it;

2. Identification (Group Membership)


Is when a person is influenced by someone he
or she likes or looks up to, like a movie star,
social celebrity, or a superhero;
3. Internalization (Genuine Acceptance
of group Norms)
Is when a person is able to own a
certain belief or act, and is willing to
make it known publicly and privately.
Cross cultural relationships – How to
deal with differences?

1. Do not make assumptions.


 It’s common to defend your culture
 Stereotypes are source of misunderstanding
 Find out why others have certain habits, beliefs
and traditions
 Try to look at other’s way of living thought
their eyes
2. Respect differences.
 Avoid Passive aggressive feeling
towards others
 Understand where there they are
coming from
 Reading others’ culture and history
 Visit the country
3. Understand and Explore
 Get to know their culture
 The more you know the easier it
becomes to understand
 Remember you don’t have to like
everything their culture has to offer

DIFFERENT WAYS OF COMUNICATING

 Try to find out the right
communication style
 Tell each other when you feel
offended or not taken seriously
