Background of Study

Listening is a crucial skill since language learning depend on

listening.

Listening becomes one of the skills that incorporated into

curriculum of English subject in Indonesia.

In fact, students face some difficulties in listening. Lack of

vocabulary mastery become the most difficulty for them.

The researcher believe that vocabulary mastery and listening

comprehension have special relation.
Statement of the Problem

How is the students’ vocabulary mastery?

How is the students’ listening comprehension?

Is there any significant correlation?

Objectives of Study

To investigate the students’ vocabulary mastery

To investigate the students’ listening comprehension

To investigate whether there is any significant

correlation
Scope and Limitation

Focuses on the correlation

Try to describe whether students who are good at

vocabulary also good at listening

Conducted at the tenth grade students’ of SMK

Cendika Bangsa Kepanjen
Research Hypothesis

Null Hypothesis  There is no correlation

Alternative Hypothesis  There is significant correlation

Research Method

QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH METHOD

- Data collected are represented numerically
- Quantitative data are analyzed mathematically
- Result are expressed in statistical terminology
Research Design

CORRELATION RESEARCH DESIGN

Correlation Research Design is a study to

determine whether that two or more variables are
correlated. It means whether an increase/decrease
of one variable is in line or equal with the
increase/decrease of another variable
Variable

X Variable  Students’ Vocabulary Mastery

Y Variable  Students’ Listening Comprehension
Source of Data

Library Research
Gathered data and information from source book
Field Research

Data Collection

INSTRUMENT
VOCABULARY MASTERY TEST
- Multiple choice form
- 40 questions
- From electronic school book

LISTENING COMPREHENSION TEST

-Multiple choice form
- 40 questions
- From many sources
Validity

 Measurement which shows the grades of number of

an instrument

 The correctness of assessment

 Use Pearson Product Moment formula

 Analyzed by using SPSS Version 22

Reliability

 Degree of preciseness of the language skill

assessment result in representing the actual level of
the skill of the examinees.

 Use Cronbach Alpha formula

 Analyzed by using SPSS Version 22

Technique of Data Analysis

 Vocabulary Mastery and Listening Comprehension

Using Ms. Excel program in discovering the mean,
minimum score and maximum score.

 Correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and

listening comprehension.
- Using SPSS Version 22 to make a scatter plot
- Using Pearson Product Moment Correlation formula
to know the strength of correlation
- Using t-test formula in testing the significance
Students’ Vocabulary Mastery

 Average Score : 81,1

Minimum Score : 60
Maximum Score : 95

 36% of students categorized as Excellent

50% of students categorized as Good
14% of students categorized as Fair
Students’ Listening Comprehension

 Average Score : 78,8

Minimum Score : 60
Maximum Score : 95

 24% of students categorized as Excellent

66% of students categorized as Good
10% of students categorized as Fair
Correlation Between Students’ Vocabulary
Mastery and Listening Comprehension

 The scatter plot showing an uphill pattern

from bottom left to up right (show positive
correlation)

 The coefficient correlation obtained (rxy) is

0,555. It is bigger than r-table is 0,2787. The
strength of correlation considered as
moderate. Null hypothesis rejected and
Alternative hypothesis is accepted

 The t-calculated is 4,622 and t-table is 2,011.

There is significant correlation
Validity of Research Instrument

 Vocabulary Mastery Test

There are 11 items test that considered
as invalid questions

 Listening Comprehension Test

There are 16 items test that considered
as invalid questions
Reliability of Research Instrument

 Vocabulary Mastery Test

The Cronbach Alpha value is 0,739.
Considered as Reliable

 Listening Comprehension Test

The Cronbach Alpha value is 0,735.
Considered as Reliable
Students’ Students’ listening

mastery is good is good

There is significant
correlation between students’
vocabulary mastery and their
listening comprehension
FOR STUDENTS
FOR TEACHER
Enriching vocabulary
