What is a Subject?
• In any sentence, the subject is the person
being talked about.
• For example:
• María is smart.
• Luis and Marisa are siblings.
• Mrs. Rodríguez is a Spanish teacher.
• The dog is eating food off the floor!
What is a Pronoun?
• Pronouns are used as substitute words to refer to
people.
• They are used to avoid saying the person’s name over
and over again (or objects!).
• For example:
• Carlos is tired this morning. Carlos went to the café and
Carlos ordered coffee. Carlos drank the coffee at school
and Carlos thought the coffee was delicious. becomes
• Carlos is tired this morning. He went to the café and he
ordered coffee. He drank it at school and he tought it was
delicious.
So, what are Subject Pronouns?
• Subject: the person being talked about.
• Pronouns: words that we use to substitute names.
• THEREFORE:
• Subject Pronouns: words that we use to substitute
for people that we are talking about.
• For example:
• Marisa is my sister. She is very smart.
• Those boys are swimming. They are having fun.

you (formal) usted y’all ustedes
Tú - You familiar or informal
• You use tú when talking
to friends or people
who you are on a first
names basis with.
• You use tú when you
talk to each other, your
friends, or people your
own age, like
classmates.
Usted - you formal or respectful
• You use usted when
talking to people who
you are on a last name
basis with.
• Use usted when talking
to people whom you
respect, or who are on a
position of authority.

Subjects Pronouns and Verbs

• In Spanish a verb can tell the subject of the sentence


all by itself! This happens when you conjugate the
verb.
• However, it is often times necessary to use a subject
pronoun to help clarify the conjugation of the verb.

• Now, lets learn a verb conjugation!


SER- TO BE
• Yo- SOY( I am) • Nosotros
• Nosotras SOMOS(we
are)
• Tú- ERES (you fam are)

• Usted • Ustedes

Ser: to tell where you are from
• You use ser to tell where
people are from. Here is the
formula:

• Subject + Ser + de +
country.

• Ex: Yo soy de Chile.


Tú eres de Perú.
Ellos son de Honduras.
