at first roman begin as a small vilage on the banks
of the Tiber.

the periods of rome divided in to 3

major periods.

- Regal 753 – 510 B.C

- Republican 509 - 29 B.C

- Imperial 27 B.C – A.D 476

 Roman was monarchical

 Ruled by 7 kings

 First king was Romulus.

 The Republic begins
509 - 29 B.C

 rome adopted a republican system of government
Which the state ruled by 2 anually elected representatives
called preator’s.

Even so, Rome found itself divided across class lines

 divided between two class lines

- Optimates ( The Best Men)
- Populares ( The People )
 
 the Optimates held with traditional political and
social values which favored the power of the Senate
of Rome and the prestige and superiority of the
ruling class

 The Populares, again generally speaking, favored

reform and democratization of the Roman Republic.
 Julius Caesar becomes a dictator



The statesman and general Julius Caesar (100-44 B.C.) expanded

the Roman Republic through a series of battles across Europe
before declaring himself dictator for life. He died famously on the
steps of the Senate at the hands of political rivals. Julius Caesar is
often remembered as one of the greatest military minds in history
and credited with laying the foundation for the Roman Empire.
 
 Gaius Julius Caesar, one of the world’s greatest
military leaders, was born into a senatorial, patrician
family and was the nephew of another famous
Roman general, Marius.

 After the death of Marius and the rise of Sulla,

Caesar’s life was for a time in jeopardy, but in the
early 60s b.c. he launched his own successful political
and military career.
 Roman Empire begins

 The Roman Empire was founded when Augustus Caesar proclaimed
himself the first emperor of Rome in 31BC and came to an end with
the fall of Constantinople in 1453CE.

 An empire is a political system in which a group of people are ruled

by a single individual, an emperor or empress. The Roman Empire
began with the reign of Emperor Augustus. The power of the Senate
was limited and became an organ to support the emperor. 

 The period between Augustus and Diocletian is called High Empire,

while the Low Empire is the era between Diocletian and the fall of
the Roman Empire in the West.
 Christianity becomes the official religion

 Rome splits

 The Western Roman Empire was the western part of
the Roman Empire which, later, became known as
The Holy Roman Empire.

 By 285 CE the Roman Empire had grown so vast that

it was no longer feasible to govern all the provinces
from the central seat of Rome.
 

 The Emperor Diocletian divided the empire into

halves with the Eastern Empire governed out of
Byzantium (later Constantinople) and the Western
Empire governed from Rome
 

 One of most widely accepted causes - the influx of a
barbaric horde.

 They believe the fall of Rome simply came because

the barbarians took advantage of difficulties already
existing in Rome - problems that included a decaying
city (both physically and morally), little to no tax
revenue, overpopulation, poor leadership, and, most
importantly, inadequate defense

