LTE Measurements

• In LTE different measurements should be

done by both the UE and the eNB:
• Channel Quality : ( Channel Quality Indicator)
• Radio Link Quality ( RSRP and RSRQ): will be
used for Cell selection and Reselection and
HO.
• Timing Advance to keep an UL
synchronisation
• BLER, SINR .....
• Some measurement of INTER-RAT ( GSM,
UMTS CDMA200)

Reference Signals Received Power (RSRP)
• RSRP is the Average Power of RS included in one
OFDM Symbol
Reported value* Measured quantity value Unit

RSRP_00 RSRP  -140 dBm

RSRP_01 -140  RSRP < -139 dBm

RSRP_02 -139  RSRP < -138 dBm

… … …

RSRP_95 -46  RSRP < -45 dBm

RSRP_96 -45  RSRP < -44 dBm

RSRP_97 -44  RSRP dBm

Reference Signals Received Quality (RSRQ)
• RSRQ = N*RSRP/RSSI
• RSSI = Received Signal Strength Indicator
• RSRQ = Reference Signal Received Quality
Reported value* Measured quantity value Unit

RSRQ_00 RSRQ  -19.5 dB

RSRQ_01 -19.5  RSRQ < -19 dB

RSRQ_02 -19  RSRQ < -18.5 dB

… … …

RSRQ_32 -4  RSRQ < -3.5 dB

RSRQ_33 -3.5  RSRQ < -3 dB

RSRQ_34 -3  RSRQ dB

• Handover Measurements
Timing Advance
• Different UEs in the cell may
have different position and
therefore different propagation
delay
• Different UE should respect the
eNB reception timing
• Only UL timing advance no DL
• The Timing advance granularity is
0.52 µsec
• Rach procedure is used to
determine the TA

Cell Selection Criterion: S

E-UTRAN cells: Srxlev > 0

Suitable UTRAN cells: Srxlev > 0 AND Squal > 0
Cell
GSM cells: Srxlev > 0

Srxlev = Qrxlevmeas – (Qrxlevmin – Qrxlevminoffset*) - Pcompensation **

Squal = Qqualmeas – Qqualmin
* Qrxlevminoffset: only when camping in VPLMN

** Pcompensation = max(UE_TXPWR_MAX_RACH - P_MAX, 0)

Neighbor Cell Measurements
Measurement of neighbor cells:

Intra - Frequency:
Srxlev <= Sintrasearch

Inter - Frequency:
Srxlev <= Snonintrasearch OR Prio (inter – f) > Prio (serving)

Inter - RAT:
Srxlev <= Snonintrasearch OR Prio (inter - RAT) > Prio (serving)
Cell Ranking Criterion: R
Ranking of cells:

Rs = Qmeas,s + QhystS

Rn = Qmeas,n – Qoffsets,n

Rn > Rs => cell reselection

Best Rank is the Highest R
Inter-Frequency and Inter-RAT Cell
Reselection

• IF UE camps longer than 1 sec in the serving cell

• And
– a higher priority neighbour fullfills (during TreselectionRAT):
SnonServingCell,x > Threshhigh
– Or
– SServingCell < Threshserving,low and SnonServingCell,x > Threshx,low

 reselect neighbour cell.

Handover Measurements
• The UE is going to follow the
commands of the eNB received in
the Measurement Control Message
to know: When and What should the
UE measure. And When should he
send measurement Report.
