REINFORCEMENT
• In civil engineering the term reinforcement is
used for the steel bars that we put inside of
concrete.

Cover Blocks
A cover block is essentially a spacer that is
used to lift the rebar matrix off the ground
so that concrete may flow underneath the
rebar.
Cover blocks are used for the following
reasons

To maintain a specified distance

between the rebar and the shuttering.
To protect the steel reinforcement bars
from environmental effects to prevent
their corrosion.
TYPES OF COVER BLOCKS

concrete cover block

PVC cover block
Steel cover block
Aluminum cover block
Stones as cover block
Clear cover is the distance from outer surface
of concrete member to the outer surface of
steel (either main reinforcement or stirrups).
Various Diameters of Rebar
Tests on Reinforcement Bars:

Rolling Margin is the deviation of actual

unit weight to that of Standard unit
weight as per IS Standards.
OR
Rolling margin is the difference
between the theoretical and actual
weight of steel. NOTE :-

LET’S PEFORM THE TEST

PROCEDURE

•You should check for rusting of steel,

slightly rusted steel is good for bonding.
the steel should not show a scaling
effect over it.
If it shows scaling and the ribs
of steel are not seen due to rusting then
this type of steel should not be accepted
in any condition.
• You need to take at least 3 bars for its sample
from different bundles approx length of 1 meter.

• when you compare the actual weight vs.

therotical weight and calculate the weight of
steel theoratically it is called as rolling margin.
NOTE :-
FOR EXAMPLE 1
MERTIC
TON =
100 metric ton of 16mm Ø bars of Fe500 1000
KG
grade are required to procure. Assume the
weight of bar received is 1.63 kg/Rm.
(RM :- RUNNING METER)
⇒ Actual unit weight of Steel = 1.63 kg/m

⇒ Standard Weight of Steel = 1.58 kg/m

⇒ % Deviation = (1.63 – 1.58) / 1.58*100 = +3.16 %

The Allowable deviation in Rolling Margin in R/f Steel ( IS 1786 ) :
8 mm to 10 mm : ± 7.0 %
12 mm to 16 mm : ± 5.0 %
20 mm & above : ± 3.0 %
This is the Rolling Margin in Reinforcement Steel.
