WHAT IS FIBER OPTIC
refers to the medium and the technology associated with the transmission of
information as light pulses along a glass or plastic strand or fiber.
fiber optic cable and fiber optic plastic ( FOP )
fiber optic cable is used for long distance transmission
FOP is only used for short distance communication
Made from glass and silicon ( SiO2)
PART OF FIBER OPTIC
FIBER OPTIC SENSING FOR SEISMIC
First demonstrated by a scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Labolatory
and Stanford University (J. Ajo-Fraklin).
Dark fiber, an excess of optical fiber cables underground, could soon function as
sensor arrays, particularly in applications such as seismic monitoring and other
subsurface activity.
Fiber optic sensor technology uses high-power

DISTRIBUTED ACOUSTIC SENSING (DAS)
Uses laser beam pulses to detect vibrations along the fiber cable
Placing the interrogator along the fiber cable to detect and transmit pulses of
infrared light
Seismic activity causes the laser beam to be reflected and reflected back to the
sensor
Sending pulsations continuously, it can determine changes in the emission of light
from time to time and then measure the speed and can determine the location of the
seismic
ADVANTAGES
An optical fiber offers low power loss, which allows for longer
transmission distances.
Fiber optic cables are immune to electromagnetic
interference.
A fiber optic cable has nearly 4.5 times as much capacity as
the wire cable has and a cross sectional area that is 30
times less.
Fiber optic cables are much thinner and lighter than metal
wires.
Optical fibers are difficult to tapIt is flexible, bends easily and
resists most corrosive elements that attack copper cable.
The raw materials for glass are plentiful, unlike copper.
DISADVANTAGES
The optical fibers are difficult to splice, and there are loss of the light in the fiber due to
scattering.
The optical fibers are more expensive to install, and they have to be installed by the specialists.
The fiber optic cable is a small and compact cable, and it is highly susceptible to becoming cut
or damaged during installation or construction activities.
The fibers can be broken or have transmission losses when wrapped around curves of only a
few centimeters radius.
