REAL LIFE EXAMPLES OF

LINEAR FUNCTION &

PIECEWISE FUNCTION
Introduction

According to researches, it says that Mathematics is most

often labelled as one of the hardest subject and the most unwanted
subjects that mostly people will fail on. But nevertheless,
mathematics is useful in our daily lives because mathematics is
always everywhere. It’s there the first time when you wake up in the
morning and calculate the time to prepare to go to school, or when
you sleep and estimate the hours when you sleep at night, or even
when you pay the fare and you get the change.
Methodology

• The materials or equipment's we used to gather

everything we needed for this paper is our mobile phones and
a laptop in order to gather the information we needed to
prove our stand.

• Sample gathered of the meter taxi that has 40 pesos as

the flag down rate and 13.50 pesos addition per kilometre:
Samples gathered of the price for the bowling alley per game:

In solving and calculating these real-life problems of piecewise function and

linear function, all we need to do is to identify all the given that is needed to be
substituted with the following piecewise function and linear function formulas.
Application of Piece-wise Function in real-life

Real-life Problem: When riding a taxi, the flag down rate is ₱40 and each additional
kilometre is ₱13.50.

40 𝑖𝑓 0 < 𝑑 ≤ 1
• 𝑓(𝑥) = ቊ
40 + 13.50 𝑑 𝑖𝑓 𝑑 > 1

Now, if d is greater than 0 but lesser than or equal to 1, you will use the first formula.
But if the d is greater than 1, you will have to use the second formula.

• (Remember to let d be the distance when riding a taxi.)

• Find the total cost of a traveller riding a taxi for 5 kilometres.
• Solution: Let d = 5 kilometres
Main Body

• Since our d is greater than 1, we are to use the second

formula.
(𝑥) = 40 + 13.50(d)
(𝑥) = 40 + 13.50(5)
(𝑥) = 40 + 67.5
(𝑥) = 107.5

Final Answer: ₱107.5 is the total cost of a traveller

riding a taxi in 5 kilometres
Application of Linear Function in real-life

Formula: y = mx + b
y - dependent variable
m - coefficient of the independent variable
x - independent variable
b - constant

Real-life Problem: You ride a taxi when you went to the bowling alley alone. The bowling alley costs ₱35
per game and you played 3 games that day.

Step 1: Collect all the given and identify the variables.

Formula: y = mx + b
y – ? (unknown total cost)
m – 35 pesos (cost per game)
x – 3 games (number of games played)
b – 40 pesos (taxi fare)
Application of Linear Function in real-life

• Step 2: Solve
y = n + mx
y = 40 + 35(3)
y = 40 + 75
y = 115

Final Answer: ₱115 is your total cost.

Now you know how to solve some basic piecewise
function and linear function!
