Introduction
• Population growth need for more energy

• PRPP are water consumers

• Scarcity of water resources and concerns of pollution

• Effective wastewater treatment R³

 Additional source of water through water recycling
 Improving oil recovery
 Reducing environmental impacts

10/10/2019 EN 792, DESE 1/9

Objective

• Analysis of wastewater effluent from PRPP

• Show PRPP wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) technologies

• Future perspectives for this plants

10/10/2019 EN 792, DESE 2/9

PRPP wastewaters
• Water quality parameters:
 Total hydrocarbon content (THC)
 Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD)
 Chemical oxygen demand (COD)
 Total dissolved solids (TDS)

• Physical parameters:
PH, hardness, heat, taste

• World Bank Group (WBG) effluent discharge guidelines

10/10/2019 EN 792, DESE 3/9

PRPP WWTP technologies
1-Primary treatment
 Primary oil/water separation
When oil concentration is more than 500 mg/L

10/10/2019 EN 792, DESE 4/9

 Secondary oil/water separation
Removal of contaminates by flotation

10/10/2019 EN 792, DESE 5/9

2-Secondary treatment

• Biological reactor to consume/degrade remaining

dissolved oil and other organic pollutants

Figure 3: Activated sludge process ( Suezwater handbook )

10/10/2019 EN 792, DESE 6/9

3-Tertiary treatment

• Sand filtration

• Activated carbon filtration

• Chemical oxidation

10/10/2019 EN 792, DESE 7/9

Future trends

• Shift from wastewater discharge to recycle and reuse

• To include:
 On-line monitoring
 Smart feedback loop

• Forward osmosis (FO) for oily wastewater treatment

10/10/2019 EN 792, DESE 8/9

Conclusion
• Technology enhancement is the best approach to improve
upon environmental considerations and reduce costs

• New technologies are needed to improve the PRPP WWTP

• The selection of PRPP wastewater treatment technology

should balance the economic, environmental and technical
suitability and regulatory constraints
