Impact Test
Crushing Test
Abrasion Test
Shape Test
Soundness Test

5
Specific Gravity and Water
Absorption Test
 Objective :- To measure the strength or quality of material and determine the water
holding capacity of Agg.

 Procedure :-

6
Specific Gravity and Water
Absorption Test
 Observation :-
Wt. of Basket + sample + water (W1) =

Wt. of Basket + water (W2) =

Wt. of surface dry sample (W3) =
Wt. of oven dry sample (W4) =

Sp. Gr. = { (W4) / [ W3 – ( W1 – W2)] }

Water Absorption = [ ( W3- W4 ) / W4 ] * 100

 Result :- Sp. Gr. = 2.5 to 2.9

Water Absorption = 0.1 % to 2 %

7
Impact Test
 Objective :- To determine the Impact Value of aggregate.
 Procedure :- Sample passing through 12.5 mm IS sieve and retained on 10 mm IS sieve.

8
Impact Test
 Observation :-
Wt. of sample passing through 2.36 mm IS sieve (W1) =

Wt. of sample (W2) =

Impact value =[ W1 / W2] * 100

 Result :- For use in wearing course = less than 30%

For Bituminous Macadam = max 35 %

9
Crushing Test
 Objective :- To determine the crushing value of Aggregate.
 Procedure :- Sample passing through 12.5 mm IS sieve and retained on 10 mm IS sieve.

10
Crushing Test
 Observation :-
Wt. of sample passing through 2.36 mm IS sieve (W1) =

Wt. of sample (W2) =

Crushing value =[ W1 / W2] * 100

 Result :- Crushing value = Less than 10% - Agg. Exceptionally strong

= Greater than 35 % - Agg. Weak

11
Abrasion Test
 Objective :- To find the % wear due to relative rubbing action between the aggregate and
steel balls.

 Procedure :- 1.7 mm IS sieve

12
Abrasion Test
 Observation :-
Wt. of sample (W1) =

Wt. of sample passing through 1.7 mm IS sieve (W2) =

Abrasion value = [ W2 / W1] * 100

 Result :- Abrasion value = For C.C & B.C. pavement = less than 30%
For WBM & Bituminous macadam = up to 50%

13
Shape Test
 Objective :- To determine the flakiness index and elongation index of aggregates.
 Procedure :- 200 piece of each sieve size

Thickness Gauge

Length Gauge

14
Shape Test
 Observation :-
Total Wt. of 200 piece of each sieve sample (W1) =

Total Wt. of sample passing through thickness gauge (W2) =

Total Wt. of sample retained on length gauge (W3) =
Flakiness Index = [ W2 / W1] * 100
Elongation Index = [ W3 / W1] * 100

 Result :- Flakiness Index = less than 15 % - Desirable value

Max 25 %
Elongation Index = Less than 15 %

15
Soundness Test
 Objective :- To study the resistance of agg to weathering action.
 Procedure :- sodium sulphate or magnesium Sulphate

16
Soundness Test
 Observation :-
Wt of original sample (W1) =
Wt. of sample after 10 cycles ( W2) =

 Result :-
