Heard “gadget- The changing times and
addiction” before? advancing technologies have
made smartphones and
other gadgets a bigger part
of our lives. Sure they have
made our lives easier, but at
times we get too absorbed
in them that the rest of the
world seems to cease for us.
What is Gadget
Addiction?
Gadget addiction is the use/abuse
of gadgets to the extent that it
starts to negatively influence our
health and life as a whole.
Who are the victims of gadget
addiction?
It affects teenagers and children.
It affects US.
Why?

Their mindsets drive them to explore


things around them. While for some,
gadgets are a mode of exploration and
learning, for others they become sources
of entertainment, resulting in addiction.
Symptoms of Gadget Addiction
■ Lack of concentration, attention or focus
■ Memory problems and problems in decision-making
■ Headache, eye problems and backache
■ Problems in fertility due to over-exposure to the radiation or EMF
(Electro magnetic field) of the gadget
■ Stress, anxiety and communication disorders
■ Other hazardous physical and psychological ailments
Health Effects of Gadget Addiction
■ A chain of ailments has been noted in gadget-
addicted people in the past few months, known
as “Digital Dementia.” It is a common memory
disorder that has developed due to overuse of
gadgets. It targets the brain chemistry and cells,
causing dementia.
■ Obesity : putting on weight and lethargy is the most
common symptom.
Lack of concentration: studies, games or even listening
to voices around is affected. The children get so involved
into games and
■ Aggression : Getting angry often, unacceptability of
anything but for what their demand is.
■ Depression : Irritated behavior, conflicts with siblings
and friends. Loneliness, feeling of being left out may lead
to depression.
■ A disturbed routine : late nights and late mornings with
weariness all day long. A report reveals that people don’t
even realize that their children are addicted to internet
and gadgets.
Social Effects of Gadget Addiction

■ More time with a phone, less time with


the real world.
■ It makes you an introvert.
■ Less time spent with family and friends.
■ It affects your studies.
Have you observed how much time do you spend in
front of your phones?
3 hours? 5? Or the whole day?
Are you mingling with people of your age? Do you
like going outdoors or is are you acting as a couch
potato?
When did you last attend a family get together
wholeheartedly? Or did you find yourself sitting at
the corner playing some clicking games on your
handset?
If any of all the questions cited above confuses you
with the answers, relook. Yes it’s alarming. You can
be an addict, a gadget-addict.
Technology addiction statistics
Online Usage:

24% of teens are online “constantly”, 92% of teens are


online daily. In the age range of 13-17 56% are online
several times a day, while only 12% are online once a day,
a small 6% are online weekly, and approximately 2% of
teens are online less often.
Devices:

Out of the population, today about ¾ of all teens


have a smartphone, 30% have a basic phone, and
12% have no phone at all. Boys will be most likely to
have gaming consoles for online communication
versus the girls with their smartphones and tablets
as the main medium for their communication. Over
half of all teens-56% have a tablet and 87% have a
desktop or laptop.
Social Media:

The rise of facebook, twitter, Instagram, snapchat,


tumblr, and others out there the whole world is now
connected at a phenomenal rate. Among teens,
Facebook is still by far the most popular this is used
by a large majority of teens nowadays. Among the
older teens, ages 15-17 snapchat is pretty much
champion next to Facebook. Older teens will also
use twitter, tumblr more. More than 71% of all teens
admit to using more than one social media outlet for
their communication.
How can you stop Gadget Addiction?

Self Discipline is the key.

Turn off your mobile data.


Find Diversions - Engaging in any other
activity of interest like sports, travel or
social work, or spending time with family
on weekends can be good distractions.

■ If you are still not convinced that gadget-addiction is real
and you could be a prey, we must inform you about the
alarming statistics of gadget addiction: Over the past year,
the number of gadget addicts has increased by 123
percent. In March 2013, the number of gadget addicts
was 79 million and by the same time this year the
number has increased to 176 million addicts.
■ These sure sound alarming and if the rates aren’t
controlled in time, very soon every household would have
a gadget-addict. With this addiction going so viral, it is
very necessary to get rid of it or control it before it
becomes an epidemic.
