Personality
“Sum Total of the qualities and
characteristics of a person as shown
in her manner of walking, talking,
dressing, and his/her attitudes,
interest, and ways of reacting to
other people.”
Components of Personality
• Physical
• Intellectual
• Social
• Emotional
• Value System
Physical
• Includes the mode of:
Dressing
Manner of walking
Posture
Body build
Health
Complexion
Facial expression
Hygiene
Intellectual
• How a person talks and what she talks about
is what matters about in the intellectual
component of personality.
• He/she must develop his intellectual or
“brain”
Social
• To do the right thing at the right time.
• Act in proper manner
• To get along well with others.

• Good manners and correct manners are


included in this aspect of personality.
Emotional
• Includes a person’s like or dislikes.
Whether He/she is:
 outgoing or shy
Calm or nervous
Loses temper easily or “keeps her cool”

Personality problems, such as how to stay mentally healthy


or how to avoid mental disorders are some problems that
are emotional in nature.
Value System
• A.k.a CHARACTER
• It is shown in the way we judge whether our
actions and the actions of others are right or
wrong
• This includes:
Person’s attitude
Values
Beliefs
Philosophy in life
How Personality is
Revealed?
• Personality is not revealed in one meeting. It
unmasks itself in various ways.
• Sometimes, Crisis situations reveal the real
personality.
Example situation:
 boy-meets-girl-friendship-courtship-in a relationship-
forever ? Forever? Forever? or breakup.
Personality Differences
3 factors:
– Hereditary
– Environment
– Experiences
Hereditary
We are born with a set of genes and
chromosomes which we inherit from our
forefathers and our parents. These set the limit
to our potential.
Environment
• This consists of your:
– Family
– School
– Church
– Social groups
– Other groups you interact
Experiences
• These consist of the things that we do, or get
in touch with.
Types of Personalities
• The Perfectionist
– Perfectionist live up to their high ideals.
• Perfectionist would like to be self-disciplined and be
able to accomplish a great deal.
• They are disappointed with themselves or others if
their expectations are not met.
Types of Personalities
• The Helper
– Helpers are warm, concerned, nurturing and
sensitive to other people’s need.
• Helper like to be able to relate easily to people and
make friends, know what people need and be able to
make their lives better.
• Helper faces a problem when he is not able to say
“NO”.

• The Achiever
– Achiever are energetic, optimistic, self-assured
and goal-oriented.
• Achiever gets along well with his co-workers.
• Achievers are gripped with the fear of failure or not
being seen as successful.

• The Romantic
– Romantic have sensitive feelings
• Romantic would like to get plenty of compliments. He
expected you to be a supportive friend or partner.
• Romantic faces a problem when he is experiencing dark
moods of emptiness.

• The Observer
– Have a need for knowledge and are introverted,
curious, analytical and insightful.
• Observer like to be independent, not clingy.
• Observer faces a problem when he/she is not sure of
the situation.

– Responsible and trustworthy
• Likes to be direct and clear.
• Fears failure

• The Adventurer
– Energetic, lively and optimistic.
• Likes to get companionship, affection and freedom
• Faces problem when he does not have enough time to
do all things he want to do.

• The Peacemaker
– Good natured and supportive
• Do not like expectations or pressure. He likes to listen
and be of service, but do not take advantage of this.
• Face problems when he is being judged or
misunderstood.
