Literature - human
experiences in various
forms in an interrelated
series through a medium
called language.
Types of Literature : The
Genres

1.Fiction Prose
2.Non- Fiction Prose
3.Poetry
4.Drama
Classification of Fiction Prose:

1. Fable – a short tale that contains a moral lesson


and whose characters are often animals, given
various human qualities.
2. Legend – a story made up of long ago which tells
of the origin of things, events, or forces in nature.
3. Myth – a story or group of interrelated stories that
people accept as making statements about the
universe and human life.
4. Folktale – a narrative filled with superstition,
anecdotes, proverbs, and customs of particular
group, race, geographical origin or culture.
5. Fairytales – a types of narrative that relates the lives and
adventures of supernatural spirits or of mysterious
creatures, whose behavior or actions are often playful and
benevolent but also sometimes sinister or wicked.

6. Short Story – a short fictional narrative that can be read


in one sitting.

7. Novelette – a fictional narrative that is longer than a


short story but shorter than a novel.

8. Novel – an extended narrative that portrays fictional


characters engaging in action and conflicts.
Classification of Non-Fiction Prose

1. Autobiography – the life story of a person


written by himself.
2.Biography – a book that tells a story about
a person’s life.
3. Diary – a day to day account of a person’s
activities and experiences.
4.Essay – a prose composition of any length
intended to present a tentative exploration
or evaluation of a subject.
POETRY

-Composition in verse which achieves its effects


by rhythm, sound patterns, and imagery.

TYPES OF POETRY
1. Narrative poetry – poems that tell a story
which characters, setting, and various
elements of plot.
2.Lyric Poetry – expresses the feelings,
attitudes and thoughts of a poet or a person
within a work.
Drama – tells a story through actions and dialogues.

Types of drama:
1. Tragedy – a serious play in which the characters meet with the
disaster, either because of a personal fault or through events that
cannot be helped.
2. Comedy – a light amusing play that leads into a happy ending.
3. Romantic Comedy – focused closely on two lovers in their
struggle to achieve happiness.
4. Satiric Comedy – a type of comedy in which human actions are
exposed and exaggerated, often in cruel fashion.
5. Sentimental Comedy – designed to elicit the sentimental
emotions of the audience through the depiction off stock
characters.
Literary Criticism
-The study, evaluation, and
interpretation of literature.

Literary Theory
- Philosophical discussion of
literature’s goals and methods.
SOCIOLOGICAL
APPROACH – social
contexts ( social
environment ) must be
considered when
analyzing a text.
Guide Questions:

1.When was the literary piece produced?


2.When did the writer live?
3.Does the society in the literary piece
resemble the society during the writer’s
generation?
4.Does your knowledge about the writer’s
society influence your understanding of
the character’s behavior and the social
milieu during that time?
