VULNERABILITY ANALYSIS OF FLAT SLAB STRUCTURES - 2014
Author: M. Altug Erberik and S. Elnashai
It is found that the structural effectiveness of flat-slab construction is hindered by its alleged inferior
performance under earthquake loading . This study focuses on the derivation of fragility curves using
medium-rise flat-slab buildings with masonry infill walls. The study concluded that earthquake losses
for flat-slab structures are in the same range as for moment-resisting frames for low limit states, and
considerably different at high damage levels

EFFICIENT SEISMIC ANALYSIS OF FLAT PLATE SYSTEM STRUCTURES- 2015

Author:Hyun-Su Kim and Dong-Guen Lee

Structural engineers commonly use the equivalent frame method with equivalent beams. An efficient
analytical method is proposed in this study to obtain accurate results in significantly reduced
computational time using the finite element approach. Structural analysis of a flat plate structure
having irregular plan or slabs with openings can be performed and stress distribution of floor slabs
can be easily represented using the finite element method if the stiffness degradation in the slab
could be considered properly.
Comparative Design of RCC & Posttensioned flat slabs -2010

Author: Boskey Bahoria , Prof. R. S. Deotale , Dr D K Parbat

In the present study the design of the post-tensioned flat slab is done by using both methods,
load balancing method and equivalent frame method. As the shear and deflection check is the
most important for the post-tensioned slabs the detail design for the shear and deflections
(short term deflection and long term deflections due to creep and shrinkage) is carried out.
If we consider the post-tensioned flat slab and reinforced concrete flat slab, the thickness of
reinforced concrete flat slab is 12.5% greater and its cost is 27% greater than the posttensioned
flat slab.
From both post-tensioned floor system building the post tensioned flat slab is more economical
than the post-tensioned slab with reinforced concrete beams.
The pre-stressing steel required for the post-tensioned flat slab is greater.
The amount of concrete required for a floor is more in case of post-tensioned slab with
reinforced concrete beams.
Comparative Analysis of Flat Slab and Post-Tensioned Flat Slab Using SAFE-2016
Author: V. G. Mutalik Desai, Mohammad J. Shaikh
A study on analysis and behavior of Post-tensioned flat slab is been done in this thesis.
Modeling and analysis of flat slab and PT flat slab is done using SAFE. Overall study on
PT flat slab proves that PT flat slab could be a better option compared to flat slab, in
respect of cost of project, stability and durability.PT flat slabs are economical and cost
effective than flat slab.

Analysis and Design of RCC and Post-tensioned Flat Slabs Considering Seismic Effect -2013
Author: Boskey Vishal Bahoria and Dhananjay K. Parbat
The design of post-tensioned flat slab can be done by using load balancing and equivalent frame
method. For the application of design procedure an office building is considered as a case study.
The plan of the office building (G+4) is considered.

1) From the economic point of view the post-tensioned flat slab is the most economical and
the reinforced concrete slab with reinforced concrete beam is the costlier one for this span.
2) From both post-tensioned floor system building the post-tensioned flat slab is more
economical than the post-tensioned slab with reinforced concrete beams.
3) The reinforcing steel is more in case of post-tensioned slab with reinforced concrete beams
because the slab transfers the load on the beam and more loads is taken by the beams itself.
A Review on Seismic Assessment of Post Tensioned Flat Slab - 2016
Author:Shriraj S. Malvade and P. J. Salunke
In the research areas of Post-Tensioned Slab technique, some secondary moment effects are
observed in the analysis of this slab. These effects combine with lateral loading causing critical
issue in design of slab. The behaviour and response of flat slab and Post tensioned flat slab during
earthquake is an important aspect which needs to be explored. The main objective of this paper is
to give a review on the response and behavioural properties of Post-tensioned flat slab during
earthquake and compare with normal flat slab.
For Post-Tensioned Flat slab structures, an independent lateral force resisting system as the shear
walls has to be provided. For low seismic areas only, column & flat slabs, when designed as per
rules of “Intermediate Frames”, can be used to resist the seismic forces. To avoid functional
failures (service limit state), it is essential to check long term cracked deflections in Post-Tensioned
flat slabs.
RC FLAT SLAB
Flat slab is a reinforced concrete slab supported directly by concrete columns without
the use of beams. Flat slab is defined as one sided or two-sided support system with
sheer load of the slab being concentrated on the supporting columns and a square
slab called ‘drop panels’. Drop panels play a significant role here as they augment
the overall capacity and sturdiness of the flooring system beneath the vertical loads
thereby boosting cost effectiveness of the construction. Usually the height of drop
panels is about two times the height of slab. Flat Slabs are considered suitable for
most of the construction and for asymmetrical column layouts like floors with curved
shapes and ramps etc.
TYPES OF FLAT SLAB CONSTRUCTION
Simple flat slab
Flat slab with drop panels
Flat slab with column heads
Flat slab with both drop panels and column heads

DROP PANELS:
A Projection below the slab used to reduce the amount of negative
reinforcement over a column or the minimum required slab thickness,
and to increase the slab shear strength.
ADVANTAGES OF FLAT SLAB
Flexibility in room layout.
Reinforcement placement is easier.
Ease of Framework installation
Building height can be reduced
Less construction time.
Saving in building height
