Architecture

•Chaldean
•Assyrian
•Persian
Architectural Styles
of ancient nations
were very
connected to one
another that it is
impossible to
distinguish the
difference from
nation to nation.

Buildings
-The buildings whether Palaces or
Temples appeared to have been
constructed on terraces.
.
Materials:
-Bricks; Carved Limestones; Stones;
Bitumen(acts as cement in those
times)
ANALYSIS OF BUILDINGS:
1.Plan
Floor-space of Great Assyrian/ Medo Persian is
quite similar to egyptian.
•The buildings are placed on terraces.

•Halls are found arranged side by side.


2.Walls
•Granite, Stones, and Bricks.

3.Roofs
•Timber Beams from wall to
wall and dorming roofing on it.
•Domical shaped.
4.Openings
•Opening were Arched.

(Great attention were paid to important


doorways and a large amount of magnificent
sculpture was employed to enrich them.)
5.Columns
•Wood, Some of the persian used marbles.
•Some became inspiration of Greek Architecture.

6.Ornaments
•Sculptures Slabs, Painted Decorations, and Terra-
Cotta used as enrichments of the walls.
•Carved Bulls from gateways and Honeysuckle.
•(Slabs and Carved Bulls are the deepest Interest)

7.Architectural Character
•A character of Lavish and Ornate magnificence
INFLUENCES:
GEOGRAPHY
.
•Alluvial district of thick mud and clay deposited by
the two great rivers (Tigris and Euphrates)
•Such soil, in which no stone was found and no
trees would grow, which eminently suitable for
bricks, which thus became the usual building
material in Babylonia.
*Chaldea - Walls were made from crude,
sun-dried brick faced with kiln-burnt and
glazed bricks of different colors.

*Assyria - Plenty of Stones in the


mountains but followed Babylonians in the
use of brick. They generally faced the walls
internally and externally, nkt with glazed
bricks, bht with alabaster or limestones
slabs carved with low bas-reliefs and
inscriptions.
*Persia - Hard, colored limestones which were
used in the building of Susa and Persepolis, and
roof timbers were obtained from elam of the
west, while persian tiles have always been
world -famous for their beauty of texture and
color.
CLIMATE:
*Chaldea - rain fells for week at a time
- long summer
-swarns of insects
*Assyria - had similar climate
-fewer swamps
*Persia - dry, hot climate
- country of sunshines and desserts
- extreme of heat and cold

*Persia - Betrays the influence of Babylon
-Incorporated in the religion of Zoroaster.

-Belief in the final triumph of good.
