Moles and Molar Mass

Physical Science 20
 Sincechemists cannot measure
materials by counting
individual atoms or particles,
they place large numbers of
them into a group to make
counting more convenient, like
we do when we say a “dozen”.
Chemists call this group a Mole
1 mole = 602 000 000 000 000 000 000 000
particles
OR
1 mole = 6.02 x 1023

This number is called Avogadro's Number

(NA)
 The mass of one mole of a substance is called its
molar mass.
 These are recorded on your periodic table as the
atomic molar mass of each of the elements. This is
the average mass of one mole of atoms of that
element (g/mol)

Practice
 What is the atomic molar mass of Zinc?

 What is the atomic molar mass of Nitrogen?

 You can use the atomic molar mass from the
periodic table to find the molar mass of any
substance if you know the chemical formula

(We had to learn this in the Heat unit but this

should be a refresher!)
Practice
What is the molar mass of CO2?

C = ___________
O = __________ x 2 =
Practice
What is the molar mass of methane (CH4)?

C = ___________
H = __________ x 4 =
Practice
What is the molar mass of Na2SO4 ?

Na = ___________ x 2 =
S = __________
O = ___________ x 4 =

Worksheet #22 questions 1-8

 The number of moles of a substance is related to its
molar mass using the equation:

m=nxM
m is the mass in grams (g)
n is the number of moles
M is the molar mass

This formula can be manipulated to convert between mass and moles

Example
What is the mass of 10.0 mol of H2O?
Example
How many moles of Calcium are in a 58.18
gram sample?
Example
How many moles are in 360 grams of glucose,
C6H12O6?

Worksheet #22 questions 9-20

Law of conservation of mass:
The total mass of the reactants = The total mass
of the products

We used this when we balanced equations by

placing coefficients in front of elements.
Chemists read those coefficients as moles
For the reaction: sodium + oxygen sodium
oxide

The balanced equation is: 4 Na + O2 2 Na2O

You can read this as: 4 moles of Na + 1 mole of

O2 2 moles of Na2O
