What is Quality Audit?
• Quality audit is verification activity aimed at evaluating the degree of
conformance to standard specification.
• According to American Guru Joseph Juran, quality audit is ‘an
independent review conducted to compare some aspect of quality
performance with a standard for that performance’
• Japanese expert Asaka compares quality audit with health
management.
Scope and Objectives
• Scope: Quality audit covers various aspects of activities within the
organisation like policies and procedures regarding operation, quality
control and management activities.
• It also covers activities like product design change, tool and gauge
control, storage and handling, inter-departmental co-ordination,
equipment control, record and corrective action

Objectives:
 Determining the conformity
 Ensure the produce is fit, safe to use for customer.
 Conformance to specification and that suitable procedure followed.
 Find out whether the organisations, quality policies are inline with
standard policies.
 Corrective action taken regarding deficiencies.
 Opportunities for improvement are identified.
Who are involved?
• Quality audit involves three parties:
 Client: Customer or potential customer
Organisations management
Military agency
 Auditor: Internal
External
 Auditee
Responsibilities
• Client: initiation of audit, defining standards, receiving report,
determining follow-up activities
• Auditee: appointing auditor, provide work area and facilities,
providing necessary access, provide personnel
• Auditor: Provide the necessary audit in time, point out non-
conformity, indicate opportunities for improvement
Steps in Quality audit
• There are four steps in quality audit:
1. Initiation of the audit
2. Planning the audit
3. Audit execution
4. Audit report and follow-up

• Initiation of the audit: It starts with meeting between client, Auditing


organisation, auditee. Purpose of audit are discussed, roles and
responsibilities are decided, activities to be carried out are discussed
and time frame decided.
• Planning of audit: It includes activities like resources needed,
scheduling the audit, gathering paper work for audit, decide sampling
procedure to be used, report the result and following the corrective
action

• Quality audit execution: After initiation and planning, auditor starts


auditing activities in various department. Keep check-list. Checklist in
form of ‘what to look at’ and ‘what to look for’.
It is duty of auditor to ensure all activities carried according to plan.
Non-conformities are identified and classified as major and minor.
• Quality report and follow up: All the non conformities are identified
and report is presented
• Record at the end of audit are complied containing entire audit
findings related to each area of non-conformance to specific areas of
control and activity where it is found.
• This report is presented to the management, customer, suppliers.
• Areas of improvement are discussed, steps to be taken for rectification
are suggested, auditing organisation ensures the follow up action are
undertaken
• After the follow up, final audit is carried out which shows the degree
of control found throughout the system audited.
Advantages of quality audit
• Quality audit helps improve quality of system, as well as quality of
product
• Helps in assessing the cost effectiveness of quality system and
measure effectiveness of quality programs.
• Helps in increasing the productivity of the system.
• Helps in reducing wastage of manpower, machine and material also
helps to reduce mistake.
• It motivates the employees as manager and employees together discuss
the problems faced by management.
• Helps identify areas of improvement and remove inadequacies.
