PRONOUNS

Pronouns
A “pronoun” comes from the Latin words “pro”
and “nomen”, which means “for a name”. As its
name suggests, a pronoun takes the place of a
noun. Thus it is also called a “noun substitute.”

• INTERROGATIVE PRONOUNS
• RELATIVE PRONOUNS
• DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS
• INDEFINITE PRONOUNS
• RECIPROCAL PRONOUNS
• INTENSIVE AND REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS
PERSONAL PRONOUNS
–It refer to one or more particular persons or things.

–Change in form depending on their position which is known as “case”.

–Personal pronouns have singular and plural form as well.

–They also have genders: feminine, masculine, and neuter.


SINGULAR NOMINATIVE POSSESSIVE OBJECTIVE
1ST PERSON I my, mine me

2ND PERSON you your, yours you

3RD PERSON
masculine he his him
feminine she her, hers her
neuter it its it

PLURAL
1st PERSON we our, ours us

2nd PERSON you your, yours you

INTERROGATIVE PRONOUNS
• They are used to ask or begin questions. They are:
• Who
• Whose
• Whom
• Which
• What
RELATIVE PRONOUN
–It is used to introduce relative clauses. It is connecting words
to other ideas in sentences. It can be singular or plural,
depending on the number of its antecedents.

–Examples:
• That boy who sits next to Micah is my nephew.
• Books that are written by him, fascinate me.
RELATIVE PRONOUN

• The most commonly used relative pronouns are:


that, which, who, whom, whose, when, where.

• Whoever, whomever, whichever, and whatever are less


often used.

• Whosoever, and whatsoever are seldom used today.


DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS
–Point out and identify nouns or other pronouns.
• This and that (singular)

• These and those (plural)

• Such (singular and plural)


DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS

• Examples in sentence:

– This is the way to our house.

–That is her room.

– These are his clothes.

– Those candies taste sweet.

– Such are the effects of drug dependence.


INDEFINITE PRONOUNS
– Refer to no particular person or thing.

RECIPROCAL PRONOUN
–Pronouns that indicate mutual interchange of action.

Examples:
The couple loves each other so much.
we should help one another create a better world.
INTENSIVE & REFLEXIVE PRONOUN
–They are compound personal pronouns that end in suffix
“self ” in the singular and “selves” in the plural.

REFLEXIVE PRONOUN
• A pronoun is called reflexive when used as object or as
subjective complements.

–Examples:
• Geraldine blame herself for the tragedy
• The principal is not himself today.
INTENSIVE PRONOUN
• A pronoun will be intensive when they are used as
appositives for emphasis.

–Examples:
• The director himself was at fault
• We employees ourselves are responsible for the mishap.
