Safety reminders on

welding practices
Group 2
HAZARD REMINDER

HEARING PROTECTION is
High sound levels required when working in
designated areas.

Understand the chemical(s)

you are working in the vicinity
Exposure
of. Consult the MSDS and
wear the appropriate PPE.

Ensure you are taking safety

UV light means to protect yourself from
UV rays while welding
HAZARD REMINDER
Approved protective footwear is needed when there is
the risk of foot injury due to slipping, uneven terrain,
Foot Injury abrasion, crushing potential, temperature extremes,
corrosive substances, puncture hazards, electrical
shock and any other recognizable hazard

Compressed • Do not drop

Gas • Do not keep near to heat

Ensure that your work area is clear of combustible

Fire materials that could start a fire as a result of welding
sparks.
HAZARD REMINDER
Use LOCK-OUT procedures when
PINCH POINTS performing maintenance or
There are gears and conducting any work within 12” of
exposed moving parts an exposed pinch point. NEVER
on machinery put your hands or feet near an
exposed pinch point or gears!

Ensure all electrical equipment and

Electrical Hazard machines have plugs and wires that
are in good condition

Make sure cylinders are stored and

Explosive handled correctly. Proper
grounding must be used.
 Safety glasses must be worn at all times in
work area!
 Respirator with HEPA filters must be worn
when working with asbestos containing
materials. Workers must be fit tested prior to
performing any asbestos work.
 Work Boots must be worn at all times when
working in an area where there is risk of serious
foot injury due materials falling onto the foot.
 Welding work gloves should be worn when
there is a risk of hand injury during the
course of work tasks.
 Protective clothing must be worn
whenever cutting, welding and grinding is
done. This includes welding jacket,
welding gloves, and respirator is
required.
 Hardhats must be worn when working in an
environment where there is a risk of
objects falling from above or where there is
a high risk of striking your head on objects
 Welding helmets must be kept in good
shape and have protective lenses
meeting shade selection requirements for
the task.

Earplugs are required to protect your
Hearing ears from both loud noises and foreign
Protection object damage. Ear muffles can be
worn to provide even greater noise
reduction.

(Use fire resistant ear plugs where spark or

splatter may enter the ear.)

Sustained Injuries
During Welding
Practices
Eye Injury (Optical Hazards)
Hearing Loss
Chemical, Electrical &
Contact Burns
Manganism
(Welders’ Parkinson’s Disease)
 The manganese in welding rods can destroy brain
cells and cause nerve damage. Welding releases
toxic manganese molecules which can be inhaled
and deeply affect the nervous system.
 Patients with manganism exhibit problems with
balance, stiffness, and a difficulty moving face
muscles. Welders can experience short-term
memory loss, slurred speech, sleep disorders, and
impaired judgment.
