• What problems can happen when there are communication

breakdowns?
• What does Berlin mean when he says, “(In teaching writing), we
are teaching a way of experiencing the world, a way of
ordering and making sense of it”?
• Is this only true for writing? Explain.

 What is communication?
 Communication involves transaction:
A person want to talk to someone about something because
that person needs something from that someone.

 Communication is stirring up ideas in the mind of

another.
What is communication?

• Communication can best be summarized as the

transmission of a message from a sender to a
receiver in an understandable manner.
Models of Communication
The best way to understand communication is to see
it graphically. Many authors and researchers have
come up with their own models based on what they
want to emphasize as being an important
component of communication.

oEugene White contributed the concept of feedback to the

field of communication.

oFeedback is the perception by the speaker about the

response of the listener. Feedback is a key component in the
communication process because it allows the sender to
evaluate the effectiveness of the message.

oThe speaker can only receive feedback if the speaker is

monitoring the listener.
