LESSON 4: ANIMALS AND THEIR NEEDS
Animals need a shelter where they can rest and sleep. They
need a place where they will be safe and comfortable.
Animals need special care. Bring your animals to a doctor
when they are sick. A veterinarian is a doctor of animals.
Animals need air, food and water in order to live.
Animals in a park or zoo need care. A zookeeper sees to it
that their surroundings are clean.

DISEASES THAT ANIMALS TRANSMIT TO PEOPLE
Dogs – Rabies (A very serious and often fatal disease that can be passed on
to people thru bites)
Rat – Leptospirosis (Is a bacterial infection we get through urine)
Mosquito – Dengue (is a mosquito-borne viral infection causing a severe flu-
like illness)
Flies – Diarrhea (Is the condition of having at least loose, liquid, or watery
bowel movements each day. It often lasts for a few days and can result in
dehydration due to fluid loss.)
Monkey – Ebola (A notoriously deadly virus that causes severe symptoms,
the most prominent being high fever and massive internal bleeding.)

ANIMALS AND THEIR
BODY COVERINGS 18
Why doanimals have body coverings?

• Animals use body coverings for

protection.
• Each animal has a specific covering
fit just for them.
• Coverings also help animals keep
their body temperature.

PARTS OF A PLANT AND THEIR FUNCTIONS
Parts Function
Leaves Leaves (Produce food for the plant; Absorb
carbon dioxide to make food)
Stem Stem (Carries water and nutrients;
Provides support for the plant)
Flowers Flowers (Attract pollen – carrying insects)

Roots Roots (Absorb water and nutrients from

the soil; Keep the plant in position)
Seeds Seeds (Can grow into a new plant)

LESSON: WHERE PLANTS LIVE
Let’s Remember:
Plants are everywhere.
Some plants live on land.
A habitat is a place where a plant naturally lives
and grows.
Some live in water.
Some plants are not rooted in soil or in water.

PLANTS AND THEIR NEEDS
Plants need water because it helps the plant absorb nutrients
from the soil up through its stems and leaves. It also helps the
plant make its own food.
Plants need air to make their own food.
Plants need sunlight because it gives warmth and energy to
survive. Plants uses the sun’s energy to make their own food.
Plants need healthy soil because the roots absorb the nutrients
from it.
Plants also need proper care to make them grow healthy.
