ADVANCE FRAMEWORKS

AND SCAFFOLDS
Framework
a real or conceptual structure intended to serve as a support or
guide for the building of something that expands the structure into
something useful.

scaffolding
a temporary structure on the outside of a building, made usually of
wooden planks and metal poles, used by workers while building, repairing,
or cleaning the building.
Scaffold
A temporary elevated platform and its supporting structure used for
supporting workmen, materials, or both in the construction or repair of
buildings an d other large structures.
Types of scaffolds
(common use)

Brick-layer’s scaffolds- It
consists of vertical
members called standards
at 2.4 to 3 m apart. The
standards are connected
by ledgers. Transverse
horizontal members called
putlogs are lashed on the
ledgers at one end and
into the holes in the wall at
the other end. In high
scaffolding, cross braces
are invariably used to
stiffen the temporary
structure
Mason’s scaffolds- two frames of standards, ledgers and braces are
used. One is placed close to the wall and the other at a distance of
1.5 m from the first one. Thus the mason’s scaffold is entirely
independent of the stone wall.
Steel scaffolds
consists of steel tubes
of 38mm to 64mm
diameter and steel
couplets or fittings. In
this type of scaffold
the vertical tubes
called uprights or
standards are
spaced 2.5 to 3 m
apart. Ledgers
connecting the
standard are spaced
at 1.8m vertically
apart and putlogs
have special ends to
fit into the joints in the
wall.
tubular scaffolds- mounted on wheels can be used for carrying out the
work of painting the walls, under side of roofs
Needle scaffolds- used for a
building on the side of a
busy street. The scaffold is
erected from window
corners by means of
projecting needles (timber
beams). From inside the
needles are supported on
sole pieces and the
projected end of needle is
supported by an inclined
strut. The joint between the
inclined strut and the
needle is clamped by
means of dogs.
Wooden scaffolds

Gantry with travelers-

when the stone blocks
used in the wall
construction are too
heavy crane travellers are
used. The framework of
gantry consists of timber
standards raised on either
side of wall.

Platform gantry- adopted

in stone masonry
construction as it can be
used independent of wall.
The gantry consists of
vertical posts fixed to
common sole piece at its
base and to a head
pieces at the top.

scaffold

A scaffold
constructed of
steel tubing that
serves as
standards,
ledgers,
transoms, braces,
a nd ties and
specially
designed
scaffold couplers
that serve to
connect the
various members.
Various parts of scaffolds

Standard: Vertical scaffold tube that bears the weight of the Scaffold
Ledger: A lengthwise horizontal scaffold tube that extends from standard to standard, that
supports the transoms and that forms a tie between the standards
Transom: A horizontal transverse scaffold member, that may support platform units, and which is
supported by at least two ledgers or connected directly to at least two standards
Coupler: A component or device used to fix scaffold tubes together
Plank: An individual timber board or fabricated component that serves as a flooring member of a
platform
Handrail: A barrier consisting of pipes erected to prevent workers from falling off an elevated work
area
Toe board: A barrier min 150 mm height to prevent slip/fall of material from platform.
Mud sill (Sole plate): it is a wooden plate that is used to distribute scaffolding lod over suitable
ground area
Mid rail
Base plate
Diagonal bracing
