WHAT ARE MDGs?

– The Millennium  Development  Goals (MDGs)  are

eight goals.

– With  measurable  targets  and  clear  deadlines  for

improving the lives of the world's poorest people.

– Set with a target achievement date of 2015.
CONTINUED…

– Leaders  of  189  countries  signed  the  historic

millennium  declaration  at  the  United  Nations
Millennium Summit in 2000.

– The MDG-F contributed directly and indirectly to the
achievement of the Millennium Development Goals

– The  main driver behind  its  work  being  the

eradication of extreme poverty.
CONTINUED…

– Among  the  8  MDGs,  the  goal  that  comes  at

number 7 is:

   Ensure environmental sustainability
What is Environment ?

– The  complex  of  physical,  chemical,  and  biotic  factors

(such as climate, soil, and living things) that act upon an
organism  or  an  ecological  community  and  ultimately
determine its form and survival.
What does Sustainability mean?

– Sustainable development, or sustainability, is defined by
the  World  Wildlife  Fund  for  Nature  (WWF)  as  an
economic  activity  that  meets  the  needs  of  the  present
generation  without  compromising  the  ability  of  future
generations to meet their needs.

– More precisely, it can be defined as:

meeting the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to
meet theirs.
CONTINUED…

– There are three main pillars:
 Economic
 Environmental
 Social.
-- Informally referred to as:
 People
 Planet
 Profits.
What  does  Environmental
sustainability mean?

– A state in which the demands placed on the environment
can  be  met  without  reducing  its  capacity  to  allow  all
people to live well, now and in the future.

– The  maintenance  of  the  factors  and  practices  that

contribute  to  the  quality  of  environment  on  a  long  term
basis.
TARGETS OF MDG 7

– MDG7 has four targets:

– Integrate  the  principles  of  sustainable

development into country policies and programs
and reverse the loss of environmental resources

– Reduce  biodiversity  loss,  achieving,  by  2010,  a

significant reduction in the rate of loss
CONTINUED…

– Halve, by 2015, the proportion of the population
without  sustainable  access  to  safe  drinking
water and basic sanitation

– Achieve,  by  2020,  a  significant  improvement  in

the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers
Pakistan’s Geography

– Pakistan  is  one  of  few  countries  in  the  world  to
have every kind of geological structure

– You’ll  find  plains,  deserts,  forests,  hills,  and

plateaus.

– Green mountains and dry mountains, land rich for
cultivating, and waterfalls.

Pakistan’s Climate
– Pakistan’s climate ranges from tropical to temperate.
– Here in Pakistan, you’ll find :

 Arid conditions
 Monsoon season with adequate rainfall
 A dry season with less rainfall
 A cool, dry winter runs from December to February.
 Spring from March to May is hot and dry
 Summer from June to September is rainy.
 October and November are the retreating monsoon period.
AND WHAT WE DID TO PAKISTAN ?

LETS HAVE A LOOK !

PAKISTAN’S ENVIRONMENT AT
PRESENT
– Currently, Pakistan is going through the following environmental
issues:

 Deforestation
 Air, noise, water and land pollution
 Climate change
 Soil erosion
 Natural disasters
 Desertification
 Pesticide misuse
AND WHAT HAS LEAD US
TO THE ALARMING
SITUATION ?
 Cutting Down Of
Forests/Trees
Pollution Coming from Emission Of Carbon
Factories Monoxide In Megacities
Lack Of Care To Tree
Plantations In The Usage of eco-unfriendly
Urban Centers vehicles
CURRENT PROGRAMS/ORGANIZATION
WORKING TO CONTROL POLLUTION.

– Pak-EPA
– established under section (5) of Pakistan Environmental
Protection Act,(PEPA) 1997.
– Functions:
– take measures to/for:
 promote research and the development of science and
technology
CONTINUED…

 protection of the environment

 sustainable development identify the needs for, and initiate
legislation in various sectors of the environment;
 provide information and guidance to the public on
environmental matters
 encourage the formation and working of nongovernmental
organizations,
 community organizations, and village organizations to prevent
and control pollution and promote sustainable development
WWF (WORLD WILDLIFFE FUND)

– Established in 1970
– WWF-Pakistan is the largest conservation Non-Government
Organization (NGO) in the country.
LEAD (LEADERSHIP for the
environment and development)

– LEAD International was established in 1991 by the Rockefeller

Foundation.

– LEAD Pakistan, one of the 14 country/regional programs of LEAD

International, was established in1995 to bring leadership development
program to Pakistan.

– The goal of this independent NGO was:

 to foster global network of future decision makers that would facilitate
environmentally sustainable and socially equitable use of earth’s
resources.
Pakistan Clean Air Network
(PCAN)
– Pakistan Clean Air Network (PCAN) was established in 2005 and is hosted by the
International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)
– PCAN aims to/for:
 address air quality issues in Pakistan and promote better air quality
management (AQM) practices in urban centers.
 awareness raising
 capacity building and provision of a broad knowledge base for AQM.
CONTINUED…

– Key achievements:

 establishment of Clean Air Coordination Committees

for Karachi and Peshawar
 initiating efforts to establish a policy roadmap for
upgrading fuel quality for motor vehicles.
UNICEF

– Works with the Ministry of Environment, Government of

Pakistan, Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources
(PCRWR), provincial Local Government Departments,
International NGOs and NGOs and other UN agencies.

– Aim:
 to increase rural and urban access to safe drinking water
and sanitation
MEASURES TO ACHIEVE
ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

– Some of measures to control environmental pollution :

 Combustible solid wastes should be burnt in incinerators.

 Non-combustible solid waste materials like ash, rubbish, tins, glass

pieces if not recoverable for usual purposes should be disposed of by
landfill method in low-lying areas.

 Automobiles must be either made to eliminate use of gasoline and

diesel oil or complete combustion is obtained in the engine so that
noxious compounds are not emitted.
CONTINUED…
 The automobiles, trucks and other transport systems must
have an antismog device.

 Excessive and undesirable burning of vegetation should be

stopped.

 Sponges and towels should be used in place of paper towels

and also the use of paper cups and plates and similar materials
should be stopped.

 Waste management is based on principle of ‘3Rs’ i.e. Reduce,

Recycle and Reuse. Used boxes, bags, plastics and bottles
should be reused whenever possible.
CONTINUED…
 Since about 40% of the phosphates in water pollution comes
from detergent, it has been suggested that only detergents
low in phosphates should be used.

 Smoking should be stopped (there is 5, 00,000 tonnes tobacco

pollution annually).
 Legislation against pollution should be strictly implemented.
 International action is needed to deal with the problems
 Anti-pollution tax should be imposed on industries for
discharging the effluents.
 Environmental education is the best program to deal with the
environmental problems.
