Guidelines and Scenarios for the Teacher

property that grants the creator of an original
creative work an exclusive legal right to
determine whether and under what conditions

others.

 It is important to understand copyright laws so
that you do not infringe on other’s work.

 Fair use is a doctrine in the law of the United
States that permits limited use of copyrighted
material without having to first acquire permission

from You Tube about animals in the forest during their
study of living things in their environment. She is
planning to use the smartboard to show the video.
Kindergarten students will view the video from her
Scenario #1 teacher laptop.

Fair Use (Video)  Solution: Yes Mrs. Apple is covered under Fair Use
doctrine to view the You Tube video during the study of
living things in the forest. Under Fair Use, teachers may
use You Tube Videos for teaching purposes but not for
promoting or commercial activities.
Tips for Teaching with You Tube

 Link or embed You Tube video when possible


 Do not expose the content to further copyright or

 Mr. Green teaches fourth grade at Lake View
Elementary School he has a workbook consumable
and he would like to make copies of it to create a math
packet to give to his students to practice for their
upcoming test.
Scenario #2
 Solution: YES! Mr. Green can copy from the workbook to

course pack for educational purposes.
